Trump has built this alleged threat to our ambassador in South Africa into his tweets and rally speeches. He says any such attack “will be met with an attack on Iran that will be 1,000 times greater in magnitude!” politico.com/news/2020/09/1…
But these reports came from leaked intel. Unlike intel leaked about Russia placing bounties on US troops: NOBODY in the WH has said people must “go to jail” over the Iran leak. Nor did Trump simply dismiss it as a hoax. Why? What’s the difference?
Now South Africa is out with a statement that it has seen the information and deems it “not sufficient to sustain the allegation that there is a credible threat” against our ambassador.👇
To be sure, we may not have shared all we have with SA. And I’m for any president acting urgently when credible information shows a threat against Americans—whether from Iran, Russia, or a virus. That’s part of the job. So why are these situations treated totally differently?
Russia: For what seems to be a credible threat against US troops (Pompeo raised it with Lavrov) the WH launches a criminal investigation against the leak, Trump says it’s all a hoax, and he NEVER raises the issue over six calls with Putin.
Iran: Within hours of news reports about a threat, Trump tweets about it, builds it into his rally speeches, and threatens a massive response if an attack is carried out. There is no call from anywhere to investigate the leak. Trump seems to flaunt it.
Presidents should be committed to protecting the American people and our country from all threats. Russia for whatever reason seems to enjoy impunity. The treatment of threat information from Iran and Russia is a microcosm of this larger problem.

The United States must stand in full solidarity with France, our oldest ally. It must do so unequivocally and offer all appropriate support to dismantle the networks now targeting French citizens on its own soil. 🇫🇷🇺🇸 #Nice
I am deeply concerned that the Trump administration has de-prioritized and largely dismantled the mechanisms built with allies to deter and detect terrorism and combat the ideologies that give it cover.
As a candidate, Trump exploited any terrorist attack around the world, warning about Muslim immigrants “pouring” into America and calling them a “Trojan Horse” for ISIS. This was outrageous, factually wrong, and used by ISIS in its own recruiting.

When Trump claims he’s bringing troops “home” from #Iraq, ask how many American forces are deployed in the Middle East. When he hailed pulling 1k troops out of Syria, for example, he sent another 14k troops elsewhere in the region.👇politifact.com/factchecks/201…
Worse, he then left behind a much smaller force in Syria to carry out a mission that on his own terms (“keep the oil”) has no legal basis. Those troops are now under threat from Russian military forces that were nowhere near our positions before Trump’s withdrawal order.👇
The small mission in Iraq that began in ‘14 to fight ISIS was designed to be cost effective and sustainable, built with dozens of allies. Reducing the US force from 5200 to 3700 doesn’t save costs; it may increase risks to those still there; with no apparent backfill from allies.

INSANE: Trump peddles social media conspiracy theories aimed to DIVIDE us but dismisses warnings in his own PDB aimed to PROTECT us—including multiple warnings in JAN and FEB about #COVID19 and Russian bounties on US troops.
Reminder: Now with 180,000 dead Americans—Trump never read or ignored a dozen PDB warnings about #COVID19 while simultaneously praising President Xi. And we’re still the ONLY advanced country in the world without a national plan.👇
Last week he didn’t need the PDB: his own DOD said Russian forces deliberately RAMMED our vehicles. Seven US troops injured. Trump still has said and done nothing.👇

Trump today said “nothing happened” when he handed 2/3 of ISIS’s former caliphate in Syria to Erdogan and Putin, leaving our partners to fend for themselves, and displacing 200k people fleeing bands of extremists responsible for war crimes. 1/6

Trump said “nobody died,” which would come as news to the families of those executed in cold blood as the US military abruptly abandoned its posts on Trump’s orders👇wsj.com/articles/u-s-d…

Two ISIS terrorists in US military custody (part of the Beatles) now admit to involvement in the captivity of Kayla Mueller in Syria. They should be prosecuted in a federal court here in the United States for their crimes.
The families of the victims wrote this important oped today in the @washingtonpost. Such issues can be tied up in bureaucracy for years. The WH can help push them through: Bring Kotay and Elsheikh here to face justice.

Trump rightly highlighted Kayla and her wonderful family in his State of the Union address earlier this year. Here's an opportunity for him to do something about it.

Trump plays golf as US forces in Syria now on a daily basis confront Russians thanks to his impetuous decision to abandon 2/3 of once-stable ground to Putin and Erdogan. Mr. President: Pick up the phone and tell Putin to stop harassing our troops.👇
Background on this clip below. Our troops should NEVER be put in this position. Trump surely know nothing about it because it’s not on cable news. No real commander-in-chief would ever allow this to fester.
Some more background about the situation now confronting our peope in Syria. This story is lost in light of other ongoing national calamities—but it stems from the same problem: a total lack of leadership in the WH, reckless disregard for American lives. politico.com/news/2020/06/3…
