Ruth Bader Ginsburg reshaped jurisprudence in the U.S., particularly as an advocate for women’s rights.

She was a cultural and political icon.

Her death, and the fight to fill her seat, will undoubtedly shake an already strained 2020.

Now, Republicans will have to decide whether they will break from their “no election year confirmations” stance from 2016. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
We have only ever had two Supreme Court vacancies closer to Election Day than we have now.

Both times, the incumbent president won reelection and nominated a replacement shortly after Election Day. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
It’s not clear if a confirmation process could finish before the election. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
The average confirmation process since the Harry Truman administration has lasted 50 days. There are just 46 days until Election Day, 2020. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
Ginsburg’s death creates new dynamics if there is an election-related dispute before the Supreme Court.

If the court is 5-3 or 6-3 (with a Trump nominee seated), Dems would need two votes from GOP-appointed justices to win a case. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
The future of the Supreme Court is now an even bigger electoral issue, and one of the most divisive elections in America history will now likely be even more tense and fraught. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
If there are six GOP-appointed justices on the Supreme Court, law in America could fundamentally move to the right. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP
If Trump's able to appoint a Supreme Court justice similar in ideology to Gorsuch and Kavanagh, it seems likely that abortion and affirmative action could be severely limited, the ACA overturned and a number of other conservative rulings issued. 53eig.ht/33GdyHP

This year’s gubernatorial contest in Virginia is already the most expensive election in commonwealth history.

McAuliffe and Youngkin spent a combined $105 million through Oct. 21, according to data collected by the Virginia Public Access Project. 53eig.ht/3mEAJx4
While McAuliffe had outspent Youngkin slightly, $55.5 million to $49.8 million, through Oct. 21, Youngkin entered the final weeks of the race with significantly more money left to spend, $7.8 million to McAuliffe’s $1.9 million. 53eig.ht/3mEAJx4
Youngkin's net worth is an estimated $440 million. Of the $57.7 million in receipts reported by the Youngkin campaign, $20 million came out of his own pocket. 53eig.ht/3mEAJx4

MLB’s long-overdue decision to recognize the statistics of Negro League players means that MLB’s record book is finally expanding.

Our project out today looks at the greatest pitchers and batters of the Negro Leagues and their current comparables: 53eig.ht/3uxwEfN
Roughly 3,400 men who played in seven Negro Leagues from 1920 to 1948 will finally be recognized by Major League Baseball.

Here, we put the accomplishments of Negro League stars into context using wins above replacement:

53eig.ht/3uxwEfN Image
Satchel Paige is probably the most famous Negro League player -- a true strikeout artist, whiffing 8.5 batters for every 9 innings pitched. He was their all-time leader in pitching WAR with 39.3 in his career — or an average of 7.1 over a 162-game season. 53eig.ht/3uxwEfN Image

Women of color were shut out of Congress for decades.

Now they’re transforming it.

53eig.ht/3bVNnTt
A historic number of women of color — 49, according to data collected by @CAWP_RU — will serve in the 117th Congress, including the first 3 Korean American women elected to Congress and the first Black women to represent Washington state and Missouri. 53eig.ht/3bVNnTt
In the first half of the 20th century, all women elected to Congress were white.

(That wouldn’t change until race-based disenfranchisement started to get dismantled via legislation, such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965.)

Democrats have a 3-in-4 chance of flipping the Senate, according to our final forecast. 53eig.ht/361eHL5
A ton of seats in the Senate are in play, making a wide range of outcomes plausible.

In 80% of our model’s simulations, Democrats wind up with anywhere between 48 and 55 seats. 53eig.ht/361eHL5
There are 17 Senate seats where both Rs and Dems have at least a 5% chance of victory.

But a big reason why Democrats are favored overall is that Rs have far more seats at risk. 53eig.ht/361eHL5
