quick informational thread if you're thinking about getting an IUD (I have Mirena):

1) there are two main long-lasting types, copper IUD and hormonal IUD
2) copper IUD lasts longer (10-12 years) vs hormonal (5-7 years)
3) both hurt like SHIT upon insertion and during periods,

but I've been told that copper IUD cramps are usually much more painful
4) like the name suggests, hormonal IUD affects your hormones which may affect things like your periods (can impact your flow, some women stop having periods which has been my experience)

5) I had mine done at Planned Parenthood for free with insurance, I think most insurance should cover most of the cost if not all, so check with yours!
6) at my visit, the people at PP didn't really know about the birth control...I asked a few questions and they had to google for

answers or gave me a pamphlet and told me to read it through. I did my research beforehand and was sure I wanted mirena, but be sure to do your own research first
7) idk why but doctors really downplay the pain of getting an IUD. definitely take painkillers before going.

be prepared for it to hurt and to cramp for hours, sometimes days after. I bled and cramped for a month after getting mine
8) the only thing the doctor might tell you is "the strings might cause discomfort during sex." ignore that shit and don't even worry I promise sex isn't

ruined bc your partner feels strings and if they're bothered that they have to feel strings because you went out of your way to get birth control so you can have safe sex you can go ahead and leave your partner cause a good one does not mind and would be supportive

9) there are other options like arm implants which last 3 years, so see what fits your needs best, but IUDs will be the longest lasting options. with IUDs, if you change your mind and want to have kids you can remove them earlier as well

10) every woman I know who has an IUD has had a very painful experience with insertion, but like me, the trade off for having long-term protection was worth it. just be aware that it hurtssssss and no one talks about how much it hurts bc women are the ones dealing with it

11) the experience varies from woman to woman so be aware that it will likely affect your body slightly differently and you may experience more or less side effects and be prepared for that
