BELOW is a thread of the 5 things that made me think the most!
👇👇👇👇
1 - “Most improvement takes place in environments with high rates of JOY and STRUGGLE”
2 - Stressed the importance of RELATIONSHIPS in learning how to communicate with and motivate each player on an individual level!

💯💯

What does this player need from you right now?
3 - “We need to develop players as ERROR DETECTORS & ERROR CORRECTORS.”

If we are giving players feedback on every rep - are we giving them enough space to learn to DETECT and CORRECT for themselves?
4 - “An over-used strength can become a weakness!”
5 - “As a coach, you can’t do THROUGH you until it happens IN you.”

One of my favorite leadership tools out there.

Wide-ranging applications and takes many forms.

The Apprenticeship Square. Image
As mentioned above - this tool has taken many forms, slight adjustments in language.

This specific iteration was from a clinic a couple years back from skill development guru @Topp33
Some things I like about this tool..

1. It emphasizes the importance of Self-Awareness 1ST!

To improve at something - you have to REALIZE (Unconscious to Conscious) that your bad at it!

It’s harder than would appear. See Confirmation Bias, the Dunning-Kruger Effect etc..

WHEW!

My hand is SORE after these 📝.

Incredible stuff from @RadiusAthletics on 🏀 Offensive Spacing Principles.

Coaches - if you’ve already reached out - the notes should be in your inbox.

If you’d like them - DM me your email!

Thread👇on my top 5 takeaways!
1️⃣: Basketball is about the manipulation of space.

Offense is about creating and expanding space, defense is about restricting use of that space.

@RadiusAthletics
2️⃣: “Positioning of your players is the pre-requisite to good offense.”

COACHES!

Here are my 📝 from the @BBallImmersion podcast with @BretBurchard on MINDSET!

Absolute must listen!

🏀 If you’re on my list - they are in your inbox.

If you’re not but want to be - or want the 📝 - shoot be a DM.

Thread 👇 on my 5 biggest takeaways! #sharethegame
1️⃣: It is part of our responsibility as coaches to be developing the Resilient Mindset in our players.

Separate WHO YOU ARE from WHAT YOU DO & WHO YOU ARE IN RELATIONSHIP WITH.

#sharethegame
2️⃣: Set goals of BEING not DOING.

Who do we want to become? How are we going to get there?

Trying something a little different.

But something cool recently happened to me as a 🏀 coach.

📚 There are several lessons I learned in the story so I thought I’d share the story here.

Here’s a coaching story about BUILDING LEADERSHIP STRUCTURES on your team.
👇👇👇👇👇👇👇
4 years ago - I had an incoming Freshman who was the best MS player who had come into the HS program since I’d been the coach

She was good. I knew she’d play and be one of our best players right away.

I couldn’t wait to coach her.
She had dominated in MS. But started to get discouraged in pre-season workouts going up against HS talent for the first time.

She started to doubt.
“I’m not good enough.”
“I just worked so hard this offseason and I’m not even that good anymore.”

...but - for me - the Tagging Up “gamble” was well worth it.

Our team was going to be “hard of scoring” and it generated lots of easy baskets for us.

I also love the EDGE and TOUGHNESS that offensive rebounding on every shot afforded our players. They took pride in it.

6/
DEFENSIVELY:

On Pressing - only 4% of opponents buckets came from Press Break Offense.

While - we scored 9% of our points off of TOs.

We played a soft 1-2-2 and really it just gave our opponents an extra half of the court to turn it over.

7/
Lastly - this isn’t captured in a singular number in this study, BUT...

Other than transition and OBUs -

Our best scoring chances came from getting the ball to our best players in advantageous situations with SPACE.

Imagine that.

SCORES CREATED STUDY: A Thread.

First - I wanted to talk a little about the process.

Was surprised at how short it took. Got to ~20 min per game by the last games of the season.

Watching every basket REVEALs the best and worst of of your group and your decisions as a coach.
For some context before some numbers - this year we made 2 significant stylistic changes.

1. Tagging Up
2. We pressed every game.

We did not press ALL game every game. But we pressed at some point every game..

2/
The first thing that jumped off the page was how much we scored in transition.

It was not as much of an emphasis as it clearly should have been for us.

Without it being a major emphasis - 28% of our baskets were still scored in transition.
