THREAD: There's more rumours in today's papers that the Government may drop plans to meaningfully reform the Gender Recognition Act.

Even though the majority of the public support introducing a simplified process for trans people to get legal recognition of their gender

1/6
Not to mention that both the Trade Union Congress & British Medical Association called for GRA reform this week! The BMA went as far as saying that doctors 'should take no part' in the process of trans people changing their legal gender

2/6

bma.org.uk/news-and-opini…
For years, trans communities have said the GRA is outdated. The British public overwhelmingly agreed and called for reform via consultation. Trade unions and doctors just this week re-affirmed their support for reform.

Trans people have waited too long for equality

3/6
Now, if today's report is true and the Government doesn't move forward with real GRA reform it will be a bitter blow for trans people.

But what hasn't changed is trans people's legal right to access single-sex spaces in line with the gender they identify with

4/6
This news won’t change the fact that in a landmark ruling this week, an employment tribunal decided that Equality Act protections cover non-binary and gender fluid people

What also won't change is the fact that Stonewall will continue to work with trans communities and trans-led organisations to build a world where all of us can be accepted without exception.

We will get there, together.

LGBTQ+ people face barriers to growing their families – especially lesbians, bi women and trans people trying to access NHS IVF.

24,000+ LBQ+ women age out of the system every year.

🚨LGBTQ+ couples must ‘prove’ infertility by self-funding artificial insemination before accessing NHS-funded IVF in England.

💷And depending on where you live, you may have to have to pay up to £25,000 before being eligible for NHS services.

2/5
📝The 2022 Women’s Health Strategy for England pledged to eliminate additional costs for LGBTQ+ couples.

💷In 2024, 90% of ICBs in England still require couples to self-fund at least 6 cycles of artificial insemination before receiving NHS care.

We welcome the publication of the revised interim service specification for children experiencing gender incongruence. 🧵

england.nhs.uk/publication/in…
In particular, we welcome the way in which the specification now focuses more on the experiences, perspectives and best interests of trans and gender questioning children, and requires close collaborative working between children, families and the multi-disciplinary team.
We also welcome the specification being more clearly aligned with relevant international clinical standards, in particular WPATH Standards of Care 8. Despite this, there are some outstanding areas of significant concern:

The actions of the UK’s human rights watchdog, the EHRC, are not those of a human rights body that is fit for purpose. Today, with 30 LGBTQ+ organisations, we’re sending a letter to GANHRI outlining our grave concerns. Please RT to support. 🧵👇
The EHRC’s recommendations over the past year have been extraordinary. They promote the exclusion of trans people, in particular trans women, from everyday public spaces. If they were made law, the EHRC’s recommendations would effectively force most trans people to de-transition.
GAHNRI is responsible for ensuring national human rights institutions meet international human rights standards. Last autumn, GANHRI wrote to the EHRC to outline numerous ways in which they were falling short of expectations.

After years of delay in which LGBTQ+ people in the UK have continued to suffer as a consequence of conversion practices, it's devastating to hear that the UK government is again breaking its promise to our communities, walking away from its commitment to end conversion therapy.
Conversion practices cause extreme and often lifelong distress to LGBTQ+ people. Countries around the world are acting to ban this homophobic, biphobic and transphobic abuse, and it is shameful that the UK government is not amongst them.
We call on the governments of Wales and Scotland to make good their promise to end conversion practices in their own jurisdictions.

LGBTQ+ people in the UK deserve better than this.

Happy #TransDayOfVisibility!

While communities around the world may use different terms, gender variance has long existed and thrived.

Today we're excited to share a new video with @lilyvetch about the South Asian Hijra community - historically categorised as a third gender.
With so many attacks to the existence and rights of trans people around the world, #TransDayOfVisibility is a crucial time to celebrate the trans community, and to raise awareness of the discrimination they face worldwide.

🚨 Update on trans healthcare 🚨

The #CassReview interim report is out today. This independent review of gender identity services for children & young people confirms the need to overhaul the current system.🧵
Trans healthcare in the UK is broken – that much is evidenced by wait times that can span in excess of five years.
We welcome and support the #CassReview’s recommendations for a fresh approach to the way the NHS provides support to children and young people experiencing gender dysphoria.
