Secret govt documents reveal how giant banks move trillions in suspicious transactions, enriching themselves while facilitating the work of terrorists, kleptocrats, and criminals. And the US government fails to stop it.
This is one of the largest journalism projects ever.
It involves more than 400 journalists in 88 countries convened by @ICIJorg.
It is based on thousands of government documents — the #FinCENFiles — that @BuzzFeedNEWS shared with the coalition.
More of our stories today:
Top executives at Deutsche Bank had direct knowledge for years of serious failings that left the bank vulnerable to one of the largest money laundering scams in history.
US intelligence believes this financier was assassinated on orders from Putin or his circle. But he also illuminates how illicit cash is siphoned out of the former Soviet republics and into the mainstream banking system.
First, secret docs show banks move trillions in suspicious transactions, enriching themselves while facilitating the work of terrorists, kleptocrats, & criminals. The US government fails to stop it.
Next up, @DeutscheBank. Turns out the current CEO and board chair had direct knowledge for years of serious failings that left the bank vulnerable to one of the biggest money laundering scandals ever.
After HSBC got caught letting drug kingpins launder $880 million through its accounts, its promises to clean up turned out to be hollow — and so did the government’s threat to crack down.
DOJ says it got tough, putting HSBC under a “deferred prosecution agreement.” The bank paid a fine, submitted to an outside monitor and promised to go on the straight and narrow — all under threat of prosecution.
Now, @BuzzFeedNews reveals that even under the most intensive government scrutiny, the bank continued to facilitate and profit from transactions it suspected were dirty.
China has secretly built hundreds of massive new prison and internment camps in Xinjiang, creating a vast and permanent infrastructure for the mass detention of Muslims.
Extraordinary reporting by @meghara — China refused to renew her visa, but that did not stop her — and by @alisonkilling and Christo Buschek. Grateful to @OpenTechFund for support.
Ending my first week back with @BuzzFeedNews and thrilled for what’s to come. Many new plans in store, but one I’m most excited about is the creation of new desks and beats.
The “Inequality” desk will expose stories of race and racism, gender and sexism, as well as other structural forces like debt, isolation, the gig economy, and labor organizing. Inequality will focus not only on the poor, but on the rich and powerful, and the actions they take.
The new “Rapid Enterprise” desk will take ambitious swings on fast-moving, hypercompetitive news stories — from science to education to politics to whatever breaking story we can’t yet imagine. The desk will enable collaboration and coordination across the newsroom.
Rooms are often divided by slapdash plywood, drywall, even shower curtains. Tenants endure rodents, insect infestations, leaks and mold, as well as theft, fights among themselves and other consequences of living cheek-by-jowl.
Biggest concern is fire, as apartments often lack smoke detectors, while exits are blocked by overcrowding. As one fire chief said: “You have more people in the room than you’re supposed to, so they have limited exit-ability to get out.”
