Sunday reading suggestions!

First, secret docs show banks move trillions in suspicious transactions, enriching themselves while facilitating the work of terrorists, kleptocrats, & criminals. The US government fails to stop it.

@BuzzFeedNews #FinCENFiles Second, a blood-boiling look at how the government supposedly cracked down hard on @HSBC.

But even while it was under the government’s thumb, HSBC kept moving money that the bank itself suspected was dirty.

NEW #FinCENFiles bombshells!

After HSBC got caught letting drug kingpins launder $880 million through its accounts, its promises to clean up turned out to be hollow — and so did the government’s threat to crack down.

@BuzzFeedNews DOJ says it got tough, putting HSBC under a “deferred prosecution agreement.” The bank paid a fine, submitted to an outside monitor and promised to go on the straight and narrow — all under threat of prosecution.

Ending my first week back with @BuzzFeedNews and thrilled for what’s to come. Many new plans in store, but one I’m most excited about is the creation of new desks and beats. The “Inequality” desk will expose stories of race and racism, gender and sexism, as well as other structural forces like debt, isolation, the gig economy, and labor organizing. Inequality will focus not only on the poor, but on the rich and powerful, and the actions they take.

Urgent and vivid story: Modern-day tenements of LA’s San Gabriel Valley house thousands of poor, struggling Chinese immigrants.

These “boarding houses” are overcrowded, unsanitary and potentially deadly.

@KPCC @LAist @dianawang123 Rooms are often divided by slapdash plywood, drywall, even shower curtains. Tenants endure rodents, insect infestations, leaks and mold, as well as theft, fights among themselves and other consequences of living cheek-by-jowl.

Stunning.

Five years ago, @alexcampbell published a searing investigation into "failure to protect" laws. Those statutes put battered women behind bars for failing to stop their violent partners from harming their children.

@BuzzFeedNews In one case, Robert Braxton broke the ribs and femur of his 3-month-old daughter. He spent two years in prison.

There was evidence that Braxton abused not only his child, but also the mother, his then girlfriend Tondalo Hall.

Didn't matter.

Hall was sentenced 30 years.
