Urban Mobility is one of the key sectors identified by Smart Cities under their plans with estimated investments of about ₹42,000 crore.
Smart Cities are implementing Smart Roads’ projects with the objective of transforming the important mobility corridors. ImageImage
Such projects focus on enhancing the walkability through pedestrian-friendly walkways, encourage non-motorized transport through dedicated lanes for cyclists, and provide ease of access to public transport & related infrastructure. ImageImage
These components are based on local technical feasibility. Projects also accommodate underground ducts for utility networks such as electricity, telecom, gas, water, waste-water, etc. ImageImage
Smart cities are promoting Public Bike Sharing (PBS) Systems, Public Transport Infrastructure (Buses, Bus Shelters), electric vehicles like e-rickshaws, e-Buses, charging stations, multi-level car parking infrastructure & transit hubs. ImageImage
This component also covers Smart Solutions for Urban Mobility which include Integrated Transport Management System (ITMS) with features as Automated Vehicle Location System, Automated Fare Collection System (AFC), Passenger Information System (PIS) etc. ImageImage
These Systems include features as Adaptive Traffic Signals, Red Light Violation Detection system, Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) System, Sensor-based Parking Management System, National Common Mobility Card, etc. ImageImageImage
Chandigarh is developing as green & pollution free city. For this, Chandigarh Smart City is implementing Public Bike Sharing (PBS) System as one of its PPP project with network of 5,000 bicycles complemented by over 184 Kms of cycle track infrastructure. ImageImage
For promoting digital payments & cashless economy, Surat Smart City has launched a co-branded Surat Money Card, an Open Loop Smart Card. It empowers citizens to access various municipal services (transit and non-transit) using single card. ImageImage
Being an open-loop card, this card is useful in retail ecosystem outside SMC. Integrated with Automatic Fair Collection System, Surat Money Card permits easy commute in City Bus & BRT through just tap-and-go.

To make public transit more attractive to commuters by making it more reliable, user friendly, efficient, secure/ safe & economical, Indore Smart City has implemented Automatic Vehicle Location System, AFCS & Passenger Information System across entire city buses infrastructure. Image
Jabalpur Smart City has developed 1.2 km Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) corridor on Omti Nala. This pilot project has brought visual appeal to the area & contributed for utilitarian changes of abutting land use. Public utilities are available all along this section. Image
Commuter management in Ahmedabad Smart City has drastically changed with the introduction of ITMS-AFCS project. It is an ecosystem redefining urban commute carrying almost 1.5 million people every day with a fleet of more than 1,000 buses. Image
Nashik Smart City has set-up Traffic Education Park in order to bring about attitudinal change among youngsters & achieve vision of safe roads. Students & adults are trained with the help of traffic signages. The park has trained over 21,000 students & more than 160 bus drivers. Image
Chennai Smart City has completed Traffic Park project spread as part of its long term strategy to inculcate traffic safety in the city’s residents. The park has state of the art infrastructure including traffic simulators, conference hall with LED projectors & mini-amphitheater. Image
The traffic park is unique because it offers learning in a complete way. The city intends to promote road safety among children through hands-on experience.

Visited LightHouse Project site (LHP) at Perumbakkam in Chennai today. Hon’ble PM laid the foundation of this work of constructing 1,152 G+5 houses on 1 January 2021. Ms Sirke is using Precast Concrete Construction Technology from Finland to deliver this work in less than a year.
Was extremely impressed to see the progress on site. On the one hand, raft, base concrete slab etc are going for 4 towers, precast elements like roof slab, hollow columns, stairs etc are being cast in a temporary factory type of set up around 200 metres away from the site.
A Third Party expert body will be monitoring the quality.

Ms Sirke’s senior official told me that they guarantee life for 100 years & if maintained well, these houses will last for many more years. Could observe resource efficiency, speed & meticulous precision work on site.

With this, after purifying through detailed process, consisting of stabilising, filtration with different levels of porosity & ozonisation, it delivers pure water with high quality.

This water is being taken by pipes to over 60 kms to be consumed by various industries.

Visited the Integrated Command & Control Centre (ICCC) developed by Chennai Smart City today. As a brain & nervous system of the city, it is delivering many services to improve quality of life of citizens.
For example flood control & rain water monitoring on real time basis with sensors/cameras help in better preparedness & quick response to any calamity.
It is used for solid waste management.
Garbage collection vehicles are tracked, health of 210 water bodies measured, citizens' grievances managed. It is also being used as a citizen service portal. Many other applications like citizens’ safety, traffic & public transport services, water/sewer SCADA are getting added.
