Ok, Twitter electricians:

Just lost power in *half* my condo unit

Flipping the breakers does nothing

The outlets that lost power can still power very low voltage devices (electric shaver, etc.)

What's this imply?
Ok, so they took the breaker panel off the wall, and one (some?) of the breakers had corroded contacts where they attached to some sort of rail thingy

So they are going to put in new breakers for now, then replace the whole panel later

Thanks everyone!
Things have taken a Kafkaesque turn

Electrician patched up the 110v stuff, but has to replace something upstream in the building to bring 220v back online

This requires shutting off power to two floors...
Shutting power off on a floor requires the permission of the regulator (seriously)

Regulator must be petitioned in person

Between 9:00am and 1:00pm (seriously)
Yesterday the electrician missed the 1pm deadline, so he went back today

The "supervisor" wasn't in (seriously)

"Come back tomorrow"

So if I'm lucky I'll get hot water, AC, and a stove back tomorrow

Pray for me.

I need to keep a thread of all the witticisms my British friends drop

Just now, talking about a conspicuously fit guy: "Like a condom full of walnuts"
About Jacinda Ardern: "Could eat an apple through a tennis racquet"
About a philandering friend: "He'd shag a crack in a plate"

Another time: "He'd shag the crack of dawn"

Pakistanis are not weird, Europeans are weird. Australian aboriginals ritually gang rape prepubescent girls, 30% of Africans in convenience surveys *admit* to having raped, Amerindians set records for child pregnancies, Gazan civilians came through the fences to join the raping
Lotta people saying I'm wrong about the Gazans. Ok. Maybe it was just Hamas raping.
This is a funny attempted "gotcha" considering that European admixture is lowest where there was slavery

Reading about Ram Air Turbines after the Air India 171 crash and came across this puzzling picture of Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303. How is the aircraft airborne after "both engines and generators failed due to a belly landing"? Image
Ok, they landed without landing gear, skidded for 18 seconds, and decided to take off again for a go around. How does that happen? Image
The aircraft was twice as high as it should have been for its approach, the pilots were making decisions without talking to each other, and in a weird show of braggadocio the Captain decided to "surprise" ATC by continuing to land rather than go around Image

The Rhodesian Bush War doesn't get enough play as one of the great odysseys of the West. More romantic than Vietnam because it was farm boys defending civilization. More heroic than the World Wars because it was mostly teams of four engaged in McGuyver-esque sabotage. Image
The kill ratios were wild, up to 60:1. Even when SAS were ambushed they often as not turned the tables and eliminated their numerically superior attackers. A few thousand of these guys could roll up Africa if the UN got out of the way.
