When we moved to the EU/EEA we did so expecting to keep our rights for life and, if necessary, to return to the UK with our non-UK families. The UK Immigration Bill currently passing through Westminster removes this right.

From March 2022 our non-UK family members will come under the tough British immigration rules, meaning that we will have to be earning £18,600 a year and our partner's income will only count if s/he has been earning in the UK for more than six months.
With the bill reaching report stage in the House of Lords on 30 Sept, we would like peers to vote for the amendment that opposition parties have agreed to put forward for BiE. It has taken a huge amount of effort to get here and we do not want our amendment to fail at this stage.
➡️YOU CAN HELP US by writing to a peer and encouraging your family and friends in the UK to do the same.

➡️HOW? Just read our latest newsletter or visit our website for full information and get writing!
➡️WHEN? Now! Letters/emails need to reach your peer well before the amendment is debated on the 30th September. Of course, the longer they have to read your letter, the better.

📢 Two important updates covering elements of our advocacy for UK nationals have been published by the European Commission:
1) Entering/Leaving Schengen (passport stamping)
2) Multiple Statuses

Scroll down on this link to download both notes:
ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/…
1) "Rules for UK nationals when entering or leaving the Schengen area" - includes clear information on PASSPORT STAMPING which we hope will filter through to border guards quickly as this is still causing issues.
2) "UK nationals & multiple immigration statuses" - confirming that UK nationals can hold (and benefit from) MULTIPLE STATUSES at the same time.
"This means that the host State must, where the relevant conditions are fulfilled, recognise that a Withdrawal Agreement beneficiary...

🚨 Tonight we are holding our final meeting as BIE. This may seem minor in the light of Ukraine but perhaps now, more than ever, there is a need for diaspora organisations like ours. Many of our country groups will continue and are working on how to coordinate activities. Image
BiE achieved a phenomenal amount over the past 5 years starting from zero, as this interview outlines...

But we also know that we leave unresolved issues behind, for example, we still have no response to this final letter to the UK Secretaries of State. But then 'our' Prime Minister has never acknowledged, let alone answered, any letters we have sent him.

📢 NEWS
For years we have been campaigning on behalf of families with non-UK members trying to return to the UK after the transition period. We have now received positive news...

We have finally received written confirmation from Kevin Foster, Minister for Safe and Legal Migration, that delays in the issuing of the EUSS family permit will be accepted as reasonable grounds for making a late application to EUSS once in the UK. 2/7
"As previously confirmed, where an application for an EUSS family permit is made on this basis by 29 March 2022 but is not decided by that date, it will continue to be processed and an EUSS family permit will be issued where the applicant meets the requirements. 3/7

In 7 days, thousands of UK citizens who have applied for residency in France, some many months ago, face being accused of being illegally resident with all the harm that brings. From the 1/10 the law states you must possess a card and that law has not yet been officially amended.
Some Prefectures have been sending out emails for 3 months saying the date has been extended to 01/01/22 but the decree has STILL not been published. Border staff, employers and agencies are relying upon FR gov websites which say 01/10. Image
Our home country may have voted for Brexit but UK in FR deserve better than this. FR chose to put in this process and set the deadline. They know how many applications still require processing and they know the law needs amending. There is nothing more these UK citizens can do.

FROM THE STEERING TEAM
At British in Europe we are extremely proud of our achievements since we formed after the referendum. However, those following our progress will know that key members of our Steering Team have had to step down this year... 1/4

...and what little funding we received has all but dried up.
And so, it is with heavy hearts that we announce that we will be winding down the British in Europe organisation from the end of October 2021. 2/4
We will continue to advocate on specific issues that we are already working on, such as Right of Return and the Elections Bill until the end of 2021 but we will not be able to take on new actions post that date. 3/4

📢Important conclusions and recommendations on the rights of UKinEU from @LordsEUCom in its report published today following its inquiry on Citizens’ Rights.

A 🧵

britishineurope.org/articles/78570…
Our oral and written evidence highlighted what is not covered by the WA e.g.

❌EU-wide Freedom of Movement

❌interlinked rights such as recognition of qualifications
🚶‍♀️🚶🚶‍♂️The Committee regretted that our onward movement was not addressed in the WA or TCA and called on the Government to raise it with the EU through WA and TCA institutional arrangements (para 24)
