📢 Two important updates covering elements of our advocacy for UK nationals have been published by the European Commission:
1) Entering/Leaving Schengen (passport stamping)
2) Multiple Statuses

Scroll down on this link to download both notes:
ec.europa.eu/info/strategy/… 1) "Rules for UK nationals when entering or leaving the Schengen area" - includes clear information on PASSPORT STAMPING which we hope will filter through to border guards quickly as this is still causing issues.

🚨 Tonight we are holding our final meeting as BIE. This may seem minor in the light of Ukraine but perhaps now, more than ever, there is a need for diaspora organisations like ours. Many of our country groups will continue and are working on how to coordinate activities. Image BiE achieved a phenomenal amount over the past 5 years starting from zero, as this interview outlines...

📢 NEWS
For years we have been campaigning on behalf of families with non-UK members trying to return to the UK after the transition period. We have now received positive news...
🧵1/7
britishineurope.org/articles/90701… We have finally received written confirmation from Kevin Foster, Minister for Safe and Legal Migration, that delays in the issuing of the EUSS family permit will be accepted as reasonable grounds for making a late application to EUSS once in the UK. 2/7

In 7 days, thousands of UK citizens who have applied for residency in France, some many months ago, face being accused of being illegally resident with all the harm that brings. From the 1/10 the law states you must possess a card and that law has not yet been officially amended. Some Prefectures have been sending out emails for 3 months saying the date has been extended to 01/01/22 but the decree has STILL not been published. Border staff, employers and agencies are relying upon FR gov websites which say 01/10. Image

FROM THE STEERING TEAM
At British in Europe we are extremely proud of our achievements since we formed after the referendum. However, those following our progress will know that key members of our Steering Team have had to step down this year... 1/4
bit.ly/3zhoPvZ ...and what little funding we received has all but dried up.
And so, it is with heavy hearts that we announce that we will be winding down the British in Europe organisation from the end of October 2021. 2/4

A 🧵about UK nationals applying to stay in their homes in FR:

Since last Thurs, there has been chaotic communication of the deadline.

To be clear, the deadline is TONIGHT at MIDNIGHT after which point you risk losing your rights.

So why the confusion?
We have been campaigning for a delay for 2 reasons:
1) There is a pandemic which delayed the opening of the application portal until 19 Oct 20. The delay communications were also chaotic and the end date was not pushed back, leaving less than 9 mths to apply.

It's the 5th anniversary of the referendum that has impacted our lives so deeply. Over 60% of those of us who lived outside the UK were not able to vote. Of the others, ballots were lost as in every vote. But, we had been told our lives wouldn't change, our rights were safe. 🧵 5 yrs ago we had no need for citizens' rights advocates, we were EU citizens living in the EU with all the rights that brings.
Overnight we were faced with those rights being taken from us without proper representation in the referendum or in parliaments.

⚠️ 8 DAYS TO APPLY ⚠️

We know you were told there would be no change, we know you had no vote. We know you have an EU spouse, dual national kids, have lived here decades / almost all your life. We know there is a pandemic. We know you haven't been informed. But CHECK... DOES THIS MEAN YOU?
On 1 July anyone with only a UK passport in these 4 countries will risk waking up undocumented. The only route to become documented may involve applying for a visa from the UK. Your job may be at risk, your family may be impacted.

📢 ONLY 16 DAYS TO GO

👉 🇫🇷 From feedback, we now see 5 key groups that are at risk of falling through the gaps in France. If you know anyone who risks losing their rights, please check that they know they need to apply 🧵 1) dawdlers - they know what they need to do but haven't got round to finding the paperwork to apply yet. Please remind them of the urgency (30 June) and that there are UKNSF who are funded to help them. Find their local one here:

It's ☀️☀️☀️ in SW Fr, we have stunning Atlantic beaches, 80% of us are working age or under, if you are reading a Fr paper, you speak Fr.

But, with 17 days to go, the visual is (again) old Swedish people in sweaters and raincoats, in En.
👏 trying to reach people
🤦‍♀️the creative Today in SW France it is HOT ☀️☀️☀️.

SudOuest reaches people who are used to our fabulous sandy beaches that run from from N of La Rochelle to Spain. It's what brings people here on holiday & is what people who live here will recognise as relating to them.🩴🏖️ ImageImage

THE CLOCK IS TICKING

Following the delayed publication of the report on the implementation of residence rights, British in Europe calls upon the signatories to the WA to meet their obligations.

britishineurope.org/articles/75313… The report makes for depressing reading, particularly for those in the 5 countries facing a 30 June application deadline. These shocking application figures should be a wake-up call to all concerned.

Reading the replies to this tweet shows the damage done by bad journalism over the past days. 🧵

1) we do not call ourselves 'expats', that is a loaded term designed to divide us from EU citizens in the UK. We refer to ourselves as British nationals living in the EU/EEA/CH... which is commonly shortened to UKinEU.

2) There are two groups of people:

a) those who were legally resident before the end of 2020 and are covered by the WA

b) those that weren't and aren't covered. There are many reasons for why they have chosen not to apply for residency

The trouble with just quoting the one person who is seen to have shot themselves in the foot is that the remaining 1.2million of us become tarred with the same brush. For 4yrs we have fought the lazy stereotyping and sweeping generalisations; 80% of us are working age or younger, over 60% of us couldn't even vote in the referendum.

Of those that could vote, some postal votes were lost. There were no exit polls - those that could vote, voted in their last UK constituency.

There is no way to tell how UKinEU voted. Surveys say vast majority voted remain.

EU-UK relationship. ABSTRACT: British in Europe was formed in 2016 in response to the EU referendum and out of an earlier organisation created to win back voting rights for UK citizens abroad. From March 2017, BiE and the3million engaged in an active advocacy campaign in Brussels, ...

When we moved to the EU/EEA we did so expecting to keep our rights for life and, if necessary, to return to the UK with our non-UK families. The UK Immigration Bill currently passing through Westminster removes this right.

THREAD >>

READ OUR NEWSLETTER: bit.ly/bie230920 From March 2022 our non-UK family members will come under the tough British immigration rules, meaning that we will have to be earning £18,600 a year and our partner's income will only count if s/he has been earning in the UK for more than six months.

The shallowness of the Government’s removal of the right of #UKinEU to return with EU families was laid bare in yesterday’s debate on the Immigration Bill.

A THREAD ➡️ The Minister stated that if the amendment British in Europe pushed for were passed “these family members would thereby continue indefinitely to bypass the Immigration Rules.”

A necessary thread as the end of transition draws ever closer and we see immigration 'advice' being shared across social media. How we at BiE can (and, equally as important, how we can't) help individual British citizens living in the EU. Image British in Europe can explain your rights and the law from which they derive in general terms, pointing you towards information that is relevant for you and helping you to understand what it says.
