FL state Sen @JoeGruters & GOP chair to me: “It’s idiotic.”
I asked him if he would have pro-Trump electors declare him the winner even if Biden carried Florida & he said “no.” Asked again, he said “No. We would not do that”
Incoming Florida House Speaker @ChrisSprowls was sent the tweet in question about electors & told my colleague @Mdixon55: “no. Because it is totally crazy. We are fresh out of tin hats.”
A spokeswoman for incoming Florida Senate President @WiltonSimpson similarly denied this claim, referencing statute 103.011 says electors are bound by the actual election results 👇 bit.ly/304Dw6R
To repeat Florida Statute 103.011: “Votes cast for the actual candidates for President and Vice President shall be counted as votes cast for the presidential electors supporting such candidates.”
Inside the Gaetz pitch to Senators: "I’m not going to go there and indict Liz Cheney, have storm troopers bust through the studio door at MSNBC, and arrest Anthony Fauci"
3/10
Re the federal & House investigations, Gaetz allies are pushing back on the credibility of the accuser & her friend KM who claimed to see Gaetz have sex w/the 17 y/o in 2017
Harris has raised enough money to burn a wet dog so it’s easy to see her plowing a few million on TV in Florida to juice poll numbers & see if team Trump bites
Had Biden made real ground/organizing investments since 2020, she’d have a good chance in FL
2/4 Harris lead of 14pts in Miami-Dade is certainly believable & for dispirited Democrats who suffered through the Biden Era’s neglect of the state, it’s encouraging
But Trump won Florida by 1.2 in 2016 when he lost Dade by almost 30. He lost Dade by 7.3 in 2020 & won FL by 3.3
3/4 Polls have Trump up about 7 in FL. Republicans who know the state admit Harris is way tougher than Biden. They were looking at a double digit Trump win in FL w/Joe
Now it’s looking like single digits
It’s unlikely FL becomes in play this circle. But unlikely ≠ impossible
3/4 Yesterday, Shapiro also disavowed the part of the oped where he wrote in opposition of a two-state solution (he has supported it for years, he said)
An iconic image of Donald Trump, after a bullet appears to have grazed his head and bloodied his ear in an assassination attempt, defiantly resisting Secret Service so he can hold his fist in the air to show he survived
1/5 FL’s Supreme Court ruled today to put an abortion rights amendment on the ballot AND struck down a prior court ruling that protected abortion rights
To pass, an amendment takes 60% voter approval in FL.
It will be on the general election ballot with Trump & Biden
2/5 Support for the FL abortion amendment is polling around 70%
That’s cutting it close
The FL GOP is opposed & amid partisan organized opposition, some FL amendments have lost about 10% support from baseline polling in the state
This can “fail” w/59% support
3/5 FL’s abortion amendment sidesteps the issue of weeks & instead blocks lawmakers from restricting abortion before “viability”
So if it passes, the GOP legislature could define viability in a restrictive way that will trigger more lawsuits before a conservative SCOFL
