Additional international treble headers for UEFA in March and September to catch up and to fit in all World Cup qualifiers.
Five subs for all UEFA club and international tournaments for rest of 2020-21.
22-31 March, 2021 - 3 dates
31 May-8 June - Euro 2020 warm-ups
30 Aug-8 Sept - 3 dates
4-12 Oct - 2 dates
8-16 Nov - 2 dates
21-29 March 2022 - 2 dates (World Cup playoffs)
UEFA Nations League finals will be on 6-7 October with the final and third-place on 10 October.
UEFA also confirms COVID rules for the UCL and UEL group stage.
1) If a match cannot be staged by the home team, a suitable alternative venue must be proposed. If the match cannot go ahead/reschedule, the home team will forfeit 3-0
2) If the visiting club cannot travel to the hosting club's country, the home club must propose a suitable alternative venue, or UEFA will make a ruling.
If either clubs refuses to play at this venue, that team shall forfeit 3-0.
3) In all cases, the clubs may agree - subject to UEFA’s approval - on a venue reversal or on a neutral venue provided that no restrictions apply and no city or stadium clash is caused.
4) If a club fails to inform the UEFA administration of any existing restrictions that affect the organisation of a match and as a consequence the match cannot take place or be rescheduled, the club in question will forfeit 3-0.
Testing and player eligibility
1) If one or more players or officials test positive the match goes ahead unless the national/local authorities place the entire team to into quarantine.
If at least 13 players on the A list (one keeper) are available, the match must go ahead.
If less than 13 players registered on the A list or no registered goalkeeper are available, UEFA may allow a rescheduling.
Alternatively, the club may field players who have not been registered with UEFA within the deadline.
If a game cannot be rescheduled, then the team with positive tests will forfeit the game 3-0.
The UEFA administration may reschedule matches to allow the group stage to be completed accordingly.
***All group stage matches must be played by 28 January***
If, for any reason, the UCL or UCL group stage cannot be completed, the UEFA Executive Committee will decide on the principles for determining the clubs qualified for the knockout rounds.
That 28 January deadline is interesting for sure.
Euro 2020 playoff matches
UEFA says that if the games cannot be played in October and November this year due to positive tests (less than 13 players) they may be rearranged as late as the May-June 2021 window before the start of the Euro 2021.
So no automatic forfeit there.
And the match schedule for World Cup qualifying is confirmed.
UEFA Nations League finalists will be in a group of 5 teams and will play the finals on MD7 and MD8 of WCQ.
In March and September, when three matches are played during the same week of football, a national team would typically play on Wednesday-Saturday-Tuesday or on Thursday-Sunday-Wednesday.

Last season, Pot 1 teams played eight games in the league phase against English clubs.
They recorded recorded two wins, a draw and five losses.
This season, the 6 must play 12 games to meet the draw constraints caused by 6 Prem teams in the comp + 3 in Pot 1.
Under usual circumstances the composition of the draw pots doesn't matter anymore.
But this year, (for instance) Barcelona and Real Madrid may be forced to play Totttenham or Newcastle as one team from Pot 3 and 4, rather than, say, Slavia Prague or Bodo/Glimt, etc.
🔺 How the 31 teams qualified
🔺 Inter Miami and Messi?
🔺 The old Club World Cup still exists!
🔺 Will it be competitive?
🔺 Player burnout?
🔺 Format
🔺 Match dates
🔺 Draw on Thursday
🔺 Venues
🔺 Trophy
- No group can feature more than one team from the same confederation except UEFA, with 12 teams
- Pot 1 will have paired seedings based on the confederation rankings
- Pot 1 teams go to position 1
- Inter Miami will play the opening match
The full match schedule comprising the stadium and kick-off time for each fixture will be finalised and published once the draw has taken place, taking into account a range of factors including sporting and player-centric criteria, local and fans and broadcast considerations.
Had clarification of World Cup draw conditions. We know a few more things.
- England 75% chance of group of 5
- Wales definitely group of 5
- Northern Ireland 85.71% chance of group of 5
- Rep of Ireland & Scotland definitely group of 4
Thread to explain, and here are the pots.
The specific conditions over the 4 and 5 team groups depended on the number of teams in each pot who needed a QF/playoff.
As the number is lower than 6 in pots 2 and 3, it can now be confirmed playoff teams in Pots 2 and 3 (Scotland, ROI) will definitely be in a group of 4.
There are 10 teams in Pot 1 who need a QF/playoff but only 6 groups of four.
The 4 "QF winners" automatically get a group of 4.
That leaves two groups of 4, and six groups of 5 randomly filled with "QF losers", Austria, Belgium, England, Switzerland.
Why don't leagues have a chip in the ball for semi-automated VAR offside?
🖥️ Tech by Kinexon
⚽️ Centre-mounted chip in ball developed & patented by Adidas
❌ No league uses Adidas
Adidas would need to share/licence, or other ball companies find an alternative to house chip.
Who are the ball manufacturers for the different leagues?
Premier League (Nike this season, Puma from 2025-26)
LaLiga (Puma)
Bundesliga (Derbystar)
Serie A (Puma)
Ligue 1 (Kipsta)
Kinexon has worked with Adidas, Derbystar and Puma so far.
It's not easy to overcome, as Kinexon went through 1000s of prototypes until it achieved a ball that was actually FIFA-approved, in weight and the counterweight and the balance, and that provided good results.
So it's not as simple as saying "put a chip in the ball".
