THREAD. This year as Raising Standards Lead ive taken over the running of Parents/Carers’ evenings. Here is a thread about running virtual video/ evenings and what I have learnt. Maybe helpful to others who will have to do this...
Firstly update your website and make clear all evenings will be virtual. Add details about the platform you have chosen and system requirements.
Think about getting a digital access survey out to find out how accessible a virtual evening will be...
Ensure as admin you know the system inside out. Ensure the system you have selected has already made help guides and a support system. We have used @schoolscloud which has been brilliant. Lots of written support and a dedicated phone line.
Ensure you know how to sync your data from your management information system. We use SIMS. Crosscheck all your colleagues and their classes have transferred over. Then generate log ins for teachers...
Provide a letter and details to parents/Carers with a help guide and ensure you have brief reception and office staff who will field the majority of queries. Provide your details in your letter as a port of call...
Hold a drop in session or two with colleagues to ensure they know how to log in and access their appointments. Get IT to system check and system load check to ensure all on WiFi with cameras in will hold up...
Send reminders to parents to book on and about their appointments. First round you control appointments and waiting lists and you allocate breaks for colleagues. Ensure at least a 15 minute break for colleagues. Allocate a room each and direct time before first meeting...
Some developments for the future meetings. Prioritise teachers in split classes. Prevent parents booking the same teachers more than once to allow equity of appointments. Is 5 minutes enough? Give teachers the admin rights to move appointments from waiting room to their list...
Also- let teachers allocate their breaks. And ensure I let parents know in initial letter that I will send lots of reminders and their appointments via email. Overall a very useful service which streamlines the system and has a great uptake of parents and carers...
You can also prioritise appointments for key groups. You can make the meetings more accessible to families in separate locations. And thinking further or differently. Language barriers can be overcome too.
As RSL I get EVERY single year 11 to complete a Post Mock Action Plan.
I then meet EVERY single one of them to go through it.
I then signpost more efficient/effective methods to revise.
The best one I share for memorisation is…
The Leitner System; full explanation here with references.
Plus a link to a PowerPoint to use!
Overwhelmingly students tell me they’ve “revised” but aren’t sure how to do it properly. Or are convinced their methods are effective but progress suggests otherwise.
We must teach this explicitly as well as content.

As Year 11 continue their exams and other years might be gearing up towards their end of year assessments/tests… here are some retrieval tasks you can use to help them remember! 🧵
Firstly it’s worth underpinning all of your retrieval tasks on the understanding on how memory works/forgetting occurs.
Teach your students too.
#RevisionIdeas22
Getting students to just write down revision notes isn’t as useful as making them “do” something with their expected knowledge.
Edit this template to make it subject specific & get them to populate from memory! trythisteaching.com/2017/06/poetry…
A THREAD to help you get AND keep students back/on task without getting into a debate/confrontation/argument....
Try This...
Firstly before speaking, expect and wait for silence.
Make it a mutual thing. When you talk, silence, when they talk, others are silent. (When your TA talks to the class, silence). Work on it. Routine based. Get over the bumps, but make it a minimum expectation... then...
Explain your task.
Ask for at least students to repeat back what your task is.
Then anonymously challenge. (TLAC)
Stay still.
Stood up.
And say, “we have 4 people who have not got started...”
And “now down to 1 person...”
And “excellent we are ALL on task!”
Then...
I don’t mean for this to sound like I’m a kill joy etc. But society has accepted vegetarians / vegans. But still kinda look at us non alcohol drinkers as weird. Especially when the Friday night chill out doesn’t involve wine or gin... just remember some of us...
Can’t drink or choose not to drink. And that’s ok! As ok as it is that you choose to drink. :) 💕
Anddddd pls remember when splitting bills, if you choose to divide it, remember the non drinker shouldn’t have to cover all your drinks! Ha
*REMEMBER*
When somebody is highlighting their plight/difficulty/issue, it’s *NEVER* the right time to say, but what about...
Stand in solidarity, show support, then raise your action too. Together is better than also.
I could have been better at this in the past and I have learnt. I will try to be better in the future.
Let me be clearer, if somebody is challenging the lack of representation of equitable diversity within an organisation saying what about LGBT isn’t right then, if somebody is saying what about LGBT rights, talking about gender isn’t right then. If somebody is talking about...
Happy Bday to my mum.
