The earliest education institutions looked nothing like today’s corporate forms of higher education.
Coffeehouses and salons filled with curious individuals, learning together, gave way to bloated administration and a disconnect from the realities of the job market.
Many have tried to unbundle the university.
Massive open online courses (“MOOCs”) unbundled the education component, accelerators and fellowships unbundled the network, and folks like Github and Behance unbundled credentials for specific expertise areas.
But on the education front at least, MOOCs failed to live up to the hype.
These programs failed to grasp something critical to the learning process: the respect and perspective of *who you learn with*, developed among the camaraderie of the “classroom”
The core innovation at On Deck is not necessarily better education.
On Deck is special because it "rebundles" community with learning: peer to peer knowledge transfer, facilitated through structured events, breakouts, and resources.
Today we’re excited to share our plans to bring this community based learning to the world.
We’re announcing On Deck Labs: a sandbox for experiments in the future of education, and call to help build our next 15-20 fellowships/community-orientated courses beondeck.com/post/labs
We’ll validate new opportunities under criteria including:
• Do people consider this skill/sector/subject core to their identity?
• Does its existence make our existing fellowships stronger? (e.g. value to ODF)
• Do we have an unfair advantage to build this?
8/ Behind the scenes, we are building the operational infrastructure to run tens, and then hundreds of programs in parallel, enabling thousands of learners to engage within small cohorts, and discover collaborators across the On Deck universe.
We have plans in the works for verticals such as Climate, Healthcare, Crypto, and skills like Machine Learning, Design, Engineering, Product Design, Sales & Business Development, and much more.

"Zoom school" has had us all question the value of traditional education, leading to increased participation in bootcamps, online courses, and hands-on learning methods.
Now's the time for ambitious builders to craft their vision of the future of education.
But building alone in this space is difficult.
Regulatory hurdles, slow-moving incumbent organizations, and lack of access to institutional knowledge have slowed innovation. There has never been a location centralizing builders in the field — until now.

We are excited to announce we’ve raised $20 million from 180+ of the world’s top investors and operators to create the modern educational institution for the next 100 years.
📽 Here’s a look at the journey we’re on, and where we’re headed:
We wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped us get to this point - our fellows, our partners, our team, and our investors - this journey is just getting started, and we’re grateful for your early belief in us.
Just over a year ago, we launched our first virtual fellowship (ODF3) not knowing what to expect as the world moved indoors and online.
Since then, we've reached:
- 17 different fellowships
- 3500+ different fellows
- 90+ team members
When creating an online course, activating prior knowledge is the number one thing you need to know about your students to optimize the learning experience.
In this video, Andrew shares how to do this effectively.
Over Global Build Weekend, Nivi teamed up with 5 strangers and launched Yaya, a peer coaching platform for women which gained over 780 sign-ups in 36 hours.
@AThakkar interviewed Nivi and teammate Paula Hernandez Forero on the journey creating Yaya.
They cover Yaya's initial success and it's potential future but also about their childhoods, how they came to join @beondeck and even lucid dreaming 😴.
