Given the news this week, it's not exactly a surprise that the number of new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall has more than doubled - but not everywhere in the two counties is seeing a rise, with a fall in some areas
Government statistics show that 365 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 155 new cases confirmed last week.
The number of new cases confirmed in Cornwall has tripled, going from 60 to 179, while Plymouth has seen a small rise from 45 to 74. In Torbay, cases have increased ninefold, although from a 2 to 18, while in the Devon County Council area, they have nearly doubled, from 48 to 96.
More than half though of the DCC area cases are in Exeter, with the majority linked to students arriving at the University unwittingly having brought the virus with them and infecting households. If you take Exeter out, then the figures for the other 7 districts so from 36 to 44
Of the 365 new cases, 179 were in Cornwall, with 11 in East Devon, 50 in Exeter, 2 in Mid Devon, 6 in North Devon, 74 in Plymouth, 15 in the South Hams, 7 in Teignbridge, 18 in Torbay, 1 in Torridge, and 2 in West Devon.
Mid Devon and Torridge have seen a fall in cases compared to the previous week, while numbers for Teignbridge and West Devon have remained the same.
Those four areas, plus North Devon, are among the lowest ten places in the country in terms of cases per 100,000 population.
Of the 365 new cases confirmed, 303 of the cases have a specimen date of between September 18 and September 24, with some of the other 62 cases dated back to August, although the majority had a specimen date between September 14-17.
Of the cases with a specimen date of between Sep 18 and Sep 24, 147 of Cornwall cases occurred in that period, with 9 in East Devon, 47 in Exeter, 5 in North Devon, 14 in the South Hams, 6 in Teignbridge, 61 in Plymouth, 12 in Torbay, 1 in Torridge, and 1 in West Devon.
Mid Devon has not seen a case by specimen date since September 17, and by specimen date, the most recent case in Torbay is Sep 24, Cornwall, Plymouth, Exeter, North Devon, the South Hams, Teignbridge and Torridge from September 23, East Devon and West Devon September 21,
While the number of cases in Devon have significantly risen, more than half of the cases are linked to students at the University of Exeter, who recently arrived for the start of term already having the virus, and who have inadvertently passed it on to their housemates.
All of the Exeter cases, and their households, are self-isolating and there is no evidence at this stage of the virus spreading into the wider community. In Cornwall, a large number of the cases are believed to be linked to an outbreak at the Pilgrim's Pride factory in Pool.
Of the cases with a specimen date of between September 15 to 21, there are currently 23 clusters where three of more cases have been confirmed in a Middle Super Output Area - three in Devon, eight in Plymouth, and 12 in Cornwall.
There is a cluster of 4 cases in Totnes Town and 3 in Yealmpton, Modbury & Aveton Gifford in the South Hams, and 23 in Pennsylvania and University in Exeter. Plympton Chaddlewood, St Budeaux, Cattedown & Prince Rock, City Centre, Barbican & Sutton Harbour have clusters of 3,
with Southway and Derriford and Estover 4, Keyham 5, and Mutley 11. In Cornwall, there is a cluster of 3 in Bodmin East and St Agnes & Mount Hawke, 4 in Redruth North, Lanreath, Pelynt & Polraun, Crowan, Wendron & Stithians, and Illogan & Portreath, 6 in Camborne South,
7 in Camborne West and Redruth South, 13 in Camborne East, 16 in Kingsand, Antony & Maryfield, and 23 in Pool & Illogan Highway. Last week across the two counties there were just 10 clusters.
In the South West, the number of people in hospital has risen from 15 as of last Friday to 34 as of today, with only three patients on ventilation. That figure on Wednesday had risen to 36, and new admissions have fallen from higher numbers earlier in the week (6 a day, from 8)
NHS 111 data for Devon and Cornwall is also falling - with Devon down 15 per cent and Cornwall 9 per cent on yesterday's figures, and both down by a third on the number last Friday. Whether this translates into a fall in cases (or people with symptoms anyway), time will tell
There have been numerous confirmed cases in schools in Cornwall and Plymouth - but in Devon - in the most recent week, appears to only be two schools in Ivybridge, and Isca Academy in Exeter. There have also been cases confirmed among staff at Torbay Hospital
In total, Torridge has had 71 positive cases, West Devon 81, with 142 in the South Hams, 153 in North Devon, 241 in Mid Devon, 256 in Teignbridge, 294 in East Devon, 338 in Torbay 353 in Exeter, 912 in Plymouth and 1265 in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
Torridge remains the place in England with the lowest overall positivity rate, and is 3rd in the overall table, with
West Devon is 6th, North Devon 8th, South Hams 9th, Teignbridge 11th, East Devon 14th, Cornwall 16th, Torbay 24th, Exeter 32nd Mid Devon 43rd and Plymouth 63rd
The R Rate for the South West is now being estimated as between 1.1 and 1.4 (the same mid-point as last week), while the ONS survey indicates that roughly 0.08 per cent of people in South West would test positive, up from 0.07 per cent last week
Clearly the rise in cases and hospitalisations are not what we want to see, although not yet translating into deaths (None in latest ONS weekly figures, just one in hospital this week in Cornwall). We shall have to hope that the trend continues and that cases can flatline or fall
In Cornwall, while a lot of the cases are linked to one area, the outbreak doesn't appear to have been fully contained. While in Exeter, as of yet, no sign that the Uni cases have spread to the community, and no real rise in cases elsewhere in the Devon County Council area
While cases are rising, the region and the South West is still the safest place in the country, and cases are lower here than anywhere else, and we need to keep it that way.
While some of the measures imposed may not be needed, if we stick to them, there's a chance that they may be lifted sooner than other areas, if we can keep the infection rates low and can see cases start to fall again and things head back in the right direction
New coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall double

devonlive.com/news/devon-new…
Saturday's figures show 37 new coronavirus cases across Devon and Cornwall (the lowest figure for six days). Nine in Cornwall (6 from Sep 24, 2 from Sep 23, 1 from Sep 20), 1 in East Devon (Sep 24), 17 in Exeter (16 from Sep 24 and 1 from Sep 20), 1 in North Devon (Sep 20)...
2 in Plymouth (both Sep 24), 3 in Teignbridge (Sep 22, 23, 24), 3 in Torbay (Sep 21, 22, 23) and 1 in Torridge (Sep 20). Hospital figures for South West rise again, but only by 1, from 34 to 35. Number in intensive care drops from 3 to 2
Cluster map now covers Sep 16-22, and sees four new additions, as well as two areas dropping off. Plymstock Hooe & Oreston (3), Ford & Blockhouse Park (4), Roche & Goss Moor (3) and Newquay West (3) added, as Derriford and Estover and St Agnes & Mount Hawke removed
Won't touch on all the other clusters, but main changes today see Pennsylvania and University rise from 23 to 41, Pool & Illogan Highway rise from 23 to 28, and Camborne East go from 13 to 16. All the others (above in the thread) either stayed the same or only rose by 1/2 cases
Sunday's figures show 66 new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall. 37 in Cornwall (6 from Sep 25, 29 from Sep 24, 2 from Sep 23), 2 in East Devon (both Sep 25), 7 in Exeter (4 from Sep 25, 2 from Sep 24, 1 from Sep 23), 2 in Mid Devon (both Sep 24)....
2 in North Devon (Sep 20 and 25), 5 in Plymouth (Sep 23, 2 from Sep 24, Sep 25, Sep 26), 3 in South Hams (Sep 24, 25, 26), 3 in Teignbridge (Sep 23, 24, 25), 3 in Torbay (all Sep 24), 1 in Torridge (Sep 24) and 1 in West Devon (Sep 25). Hospital figures for SW rise from 35 to 38.
Cluster map now covers Sep 17-23, and there are nine new areas across Devon and Cornwall with a cluster of 3 or more cases, but with Sep 16 removed, Plympton Chaddlewood and Yealmpton, Modbury & Aveton Gifford drop off the map. New clusters are Dawlish North (3), Ivybridge (3)..
Roundswell & Landkey (3), St James's Park & Hoopern (3), Mannamead & Hartley (3), Honicknowle & Manadon (4), Penzance Quay (4), Penzance North (3) and Newquay East (3). From the existing clusters, lots of small changes, the main rise sees Roche & Goss Moor go from 3 to 10.
The cluster around Pennsylvania and University only rises by one, from 41 to 42 (although as Exeter only has 3 cases on Sep 23, that's not a huge surprise) - it will probably rise further tomorrow when the 18 cases from Sep 24 are added
Monday's figures shows 32 new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall - as the national picture shows fewer cases confirmed today than last Monday - whether it's a genuine fall, or just a data lag issue - will have to wait until tomorrow to see
15 new cases in Cornwall (1 from Sep 24, 25, 27, 12 from Sep 26), 1 in East Devon (Sep 26), 8 in Exeter (3 from Sep 25, 5 from Sep 26), 2 in Plymouth (Sep 25 and 27), 1 in South Hams (Sep 26), 1 in Torbay (Sep 25), 1 in Torridge (Sep 25), 1 in West Devon (Sep 25).....
and 2 in North Devon (Sep 25 and 26) - no cases in Mid Devon or Teignbridge. Hospital figures for the South West have fallen today, back down to 36 from 38 people in hospital, and now just one person in ICU, rather than the 2 from yesterday
MSOA cluster map now covers Sep 18-24, and sees 6 new clusters. St Leonard's in Exeter (3), Shiphay & the Willows (3), Chelston, Cockington & Livermead (3) and Upton & Hele (4) in Torbay, Millbay & Stonehouse (3) in Plymouth & St Agnes & Mount Hawke (6) in Cornwall
Penzance North drops off with Sep 17 cases removed. No large rises anywhere in Plymouth/Cornwall from existing clusters, with many falling by 1/2 cases. Pennsylvania & University rises from 42 to 50 and St James's Park & Hoopern from 3 to 7 in Exeter
More on what is happening with University of Exeter students in this thread below

Tuesday is ONS day, and the latest figures, for the week of September 12 and September 18, but were registered up to September 26, show that three of the 318 deaths that occurred in the Devon and Cornwall saw COVID-19 mentioned on the death certificate.
The three new deaths that occurred in the week of September 12 and September 18 were all in care homes in Plymouth. A fourth death – which occurred in Mid Devon in someone’s private home in the week of July 11 to 17 – has also been registered this week.
It is the fifth week in a row were no new deaths were recorded in Cornwall, the 14th week in a row across Devon and Cornwall combined that the number of deaths has been in single figures, but after 9 consecutive weeks, the run of deaths recorded being either 0, 1 or 2 has ended.
The Isles of Scilly is yet to see a COVID-19 related death and the South Hams and North Devon have gone 17 weeks, Torridge 16 weeks, Torbay 15 weeks, Exeter and Teignbridge 14 weeks, Cornwall and East Devon five weeks, and West Devon two weeks without a death being recorded.
Mid Devon has gone eight weeks since a death occurred, although it was only registered this week. Previous weeks have seen 0, 2, 0, 1, 2, 1, 0, 1, 2, 2, 5, 1, 7, 10, 11, 15, 38, 44, 69, 84, 107, 89, 60, 16, and nine deaths registered across the two counties
In total, 581 deaths from coronavirus have been registered across Devon and Cornwall, with 306 in hospitals, 229 in care homes, 45 at home, and one in a hospice.
Of the deaths, 210 have been registered in Cornwall, 95 in Plymouth, 58 in Torbay, 50 in East Devon, 39 in Exeter, 33 in Teignbridge, 26 in North Devon, 20 in Torridge, 19 in Mid Devon, 19 in West Devon, 12 in the South Hams, and none in the Isles of Scilly.
Looks like Monday's figures had some sort of weekend backlog as 70 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Devon and Cornwall today. 37 new cases in Cornwall (6 from Sep 26, 30 from Sep 25, 1 from Sep 24), 1 in East Devon (Sep 27), 10 in Exeter (4 from Sep 27 and 25, 2 from Sep 26)
3 in Mid Devon (Sep 23, 26, 27), 2 in North Devon (Sep 26), 6 in Plymouth (3 from Sep 25 and 26), 3 in South Hams (Sep 26, 26, 27), 2 in Teignbridge (Sep 26 and 27), 5 in Torbay (Sep 23, 25, 25, 26, 28) and 1 in West Devon (Sep 25). No new cases in Torridge
MSOA maps now cover Sep 19-25, with 2 new additions, and 4 falling off. New clusters of Middlemoor & Sowton (3), Saltash Town & Pillmere (3). With Sep 18 cases removed, Ivybridge, Chelston, Cockington & Livermead, Southway and Millbay & Stonehouse drop off the map
Of the existing clusters, most of them have stayed the same today. Few things of interest to note sees Kingsand, Antony & Maryfield fall from 13 to 6, while Pennsylvania & University drops from 50 to 48. South West hospital figures rise from 36 to 41, and to 2 people in ICU
A quick note on the NHS 111 figures - after the usual rise at the start of the week, we get the usual fall as the week progresses. Cornwall down 20 per cent and Devon down 21 per cent on yesterday - but Cornwall at lowest level since Sep 7 and Devon (bar 1 day) lowest since Sep 6
Wednesday's figures show 49 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Devon and Cornwall. 15 in Cornwall (12 from Sep 28, 1 from Sep 27, 2 from Sep 26), 2 in East Devon (both Sep 28), 23 in Exeter (1 from Sep 29, 28 from Sep 28), 1 in North Devon (Sep 27), 2 in Teignbridge (both Sep 28)
4 in Plymouth (3 from Sep 28, 1 from Sep 27), 1 in Torbay (Sep 27) and 1 in West Devon (Sep 25). No new cases in Mid Devon, South Hams or Torridge added to the data today. MSOA maps now cover Sep 20-26, and seven new clusters added today, but four drop off with Sep 19 removed
New clusters are Babbacombe & Plainmoor (3), Plymstock Elburton (3), St Columb Minor & Porth (3), Truro South & Central (3), Falmouth North (3), Penzance Quay (5) and Penzance North (3). Bodmin East, Saltash Town & Pillmere, Mannamead & Hartley and Dawlish North are removed.
Changes to some of the existing clusters - Pennsylvania & University goes from 48 to 49 (the 23 Exeter cases from today won't be added until Friday's cluster maps), Middlemoor & Sowton from 3 to 6, while Kingsand, Antony & Maryfield goes back to 16 from 6, reversing the fall
But Pool & Illogan Highway drops from 31 to 24, while Redruth South, Redruth North, Camborne East, Mutley, Totnes Town, Crowan, Wendron & Stithians, and Newquay West among those clusters who have all seen falls in their numbers today
But arguably the most interesting figure today in hospital figures for the South West - while everyone else is seeing a rise, the South West drops from 41 to 33 today - last Wednesday, that number was 36 (and no hospital deaths have occurred since Sep 20). Admissions falling also
Just to say, today’s update will be later this evening. Didn’t get a chance to update anything this afternoon when they came out, but will do so when I’m back home later
Thursday's figures show 55 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Devon and Cornwall. 5 in Cornwall (3 from Sep 29, 2 from Sep 28), 3 in East Devon (Sep 29), 13 in Exeter (1 from Sep 30, 11 from Sep 29, 1 from Sep 28), 2 in Mid Devon (Sep 28 and 29), 3 in North Devon (Sep 27, 28, 29)
8 in Plymouth (1 from Sep 30, 3 from Sep 29, 4 from Sep 28), 1 in South Hams (Sep 28), 3 in Teignbridge (Sep 28, 28, 29), 1 in Torridge (no idea, but nothing in the last 3 weeks), and 16 in Torbay (1 from Sep 30, 11 from Sep 29, 3 from Sep 28, 1 from Sep 27).
The Torbay cases are believed to be linked to an outbreak at Hadleigh Court care home, as well as a customer who attended Appleby's - devonlive.com/news/devon-new… and devonlive.com/news/devon-new…
MSOA maps now cover Sep 21-27, and just the one new cluster today, with 3 in Ivybridge. But with Sep 20 removed, City Centre, Barbican & Sutton Harbour, Cattedown & Prince Rock, Truro South & Central, Falmouth North, Newquay West, and Crowan, Wendron & Stithians drop off
From the existing clusters, not a lot to report with mainly minor changes, if at all, but Pennsylvania & University drops from 49 to 39 - I suspect this will rise again tomorrow though, when the 3 Exeter cases from Sep 21 are replaced by the 23 from Sep 28
Hospital figures for the South West show an increase of one person today, up to 34 from 33. Two people in ICU, and another day of no hospital deaths has passed. NHS 111 data for Devon and Cornwall both fell again today - Devon down 15% and Cornwall 26% on yesterday
NHS 111 data shows another fall across Devon and Cornwall - down 12 per cent today in Devon and 3 per cent in Cornwall. Both counties are down 50 per cent on the data for last Friday
And a quick note on testing - latest available data for Devon (week ending Sep 25) saw 10,900 pillar 2 tests carried out, an increase on the previous week which reported 7,600 tests. (these do not include pillar 1 tests in hospitals or the Uni's private testing)

The number of new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall in the past week has fallen by another 10 per cent this week as the Omicron wave is not yet hitting the region.
A total of 9953 new cases were confirmed across the two counties – taking the total since the start of the pandemic to 244,148 – and below the 10,000 mark for the first in four weeks.
Every single region saw the number of new cases confirmed in the past week drop – and the number of people in hospital across the two counties is down to the lowest level in over a month.

We end the first week under Lockdown 3 and there's not a lot of good news, if any, to report in the weekly roundup of coronavirus across Devon and Cornwall - and things will probably get worse before they better and the effect of lockdown starts to impact the figures
A total of 5,120 new cases new cases were confirmed across the two counties – the highest weekly total so far (although comparisons with the Spring cannot be made due to lack of testing) – as the total for the two counties rises over 30,000.
Cases have risen in every single region of Devon and Cornwall – but despite the rises, Devon at upper tier level has the 3rd lowest infection rate, while at lower tier level, all ten areas of Devon are in the bottom 15 of the 315 nationwide.

As another week of lockdown passes, we've seen the drop off in cases we'd expect to see, as the number of new coronavirus cases confirmed across Devon and Cornwall have nearly halved in the previous seven days – with cases falling everywhere.
A total of 1,266 new cases have been confirmed across the two counties – the lowest since the week ending October 16 – and Friday’s figure of 97 cases is the first ‘double figure’ total since October 2. Cornwall, Plymouth, the South Hams and Torbay see a more than 50% drop.
Friday's figures of 97 are made up of 11 cases in Cornwall, 26 in East Devon, 11 in Exeter, 4 in Mid Devon, 16 in North Devon, 11 in Plymouth, 1 in Teignbridge, 10 in Torbay, 4 in Torridge, 4 in West Devon, and -1 for the South Hams, with no new cases, but one duplicate removed

All of Devon placed in Tier 2 - what it means - I've put in messages to all the MPs to see what their reaction is and whether they'll be voting for the measures

devonlive.com/news/devon-new…
Why Devon is in Tier 2 - Case rates are 121/100,000 overall though there are higher rates in Plymouth, Torbay and Exeter. The case rate in the over 60s is 85/100,000 though significantly higher in Exeter (155.9/100,000). Positivity is 4.2%. There is pressure at the RDE Hospital.
Response from @garystreeterSWD - "I see that only the Isle of Wight, Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly are in tier 1 so we must accept tier 2 for Devon and Plymouth. Our rates are continuing to fall and there will be a review before Christmas and I will continue to push...

Two weeks into Lockdown 2, and the highest number of weekly coronavirus cases confirmed in the last seven days across Devon and Cornwall has been recorded – but most areas are now seeing cases fall (and this week includes the weird Saturday where everything was double)
More than 2,000 new coronavirus cases have been confirmed in the last seven days across the two counties, taking the total since the beginning of the pandemic to 15,982.
Cases has risen everywhere, except for Torbay and West Devon, but when looking at cases by specimen date rather than reported date, only North Devon is seeing a rise - with five areas seeing a flat trend, and five areas seeing cases drop

It's Friday afternoon, and here's the weekly look back at the coronavirus figures across Devon and Cornwall, and cases have risen across the two counties (although only just in some places), but for the second week in a row, have fallen in Exeter
The total confirmed number of cases has today hit 10,000 across the two counties. It only crossed the 9,000 mark on Monday, with Friday's figures seeing 292 new cases. Plymouth’s figures rose over the 2,000 mark today. It hit 1,000 on October 5.
Government statistics show that 1,662 new cases have been confirmed across the region in the past seven days in both pillar 1 data from tests carried out by the NHS and pillar 2 data from commercial partners, compared to 1,395 new cases confirmed last week.
