unprecedented numbers of americans have poured into the streets for months now, in the midst of a pandemic, to demand a reckoning with white supremacy once and for all. Black Lives Matter and it is time for americans to stand up now.
heed the lesson of the 2016 election: this is not a shoe-in. we will need to vote in such massive numbers as to overwhelm massive corruption. not only must we #votethemout, we must vote in enough people to pass the breathe act, a bill that invests in a new vision of public safety
we’ve got to vote in people all the way down the ballot who will enact meaningful policy change which rises to this historic moment and heeds the call of the american people for justice.
insistent, tenacious, against-all-odds voter participation this november will become the difference between life and death for many.
nothing will stem the tide of suffering from covid-19, economic crisis, police brutality, mass incarceration, endemic poverty, entrenched white supremacy and misogyny, deportation and detainment, gun violence, fire, flood, disease, pollution, irradiation, exploitation...
...forced reproduction, gender and sexuality-based violence and oppression, dis-information, propaganda, corruption, and greed... short of a functioning democracy!
i recorded this song in a semi-abandoned strip mall in durham, north carolina, with some very talented musicians from that area. we all came out of isolation for the session and i wore a mask except when i was in front of a microphone singing.
i didn’t know any of the players before the session. the group was put together by brad cook and included his brother phil cook on keys, yan westerlund on drums, brevan hampden on percussion and matt douglas on flute.
later, my touring compadre @swampjig overdubbed some more percussion and a string quartet called delgani was added in eugene, oregon, arranged by my other touring companion, @toddsickafoose. pandemic productions!
the music video for "do or die" was created in collaboration with @dancingrounds and @NO_Dance.
so many people in our industry live hand to mouth, day to day. there are no pensions and no health insurance or retirement plans for indie musicians or the people who tour with and support them.
at least musicians can try to reach out to their audience online for support, but what is a guitar tech to do? what of the drum tech or the sound engineer or the road manager or driver — not to mention the promoters, the booking agents, the bartenders?
the ripple effects of the world of live entertainment going dark are vast. let’s shine a light on all the people whose work helps all of our lives to be enriched by live music. let’s support them through @NITO_Live’s advocacy. - ani
We stand in solidarity with the protests to end police violence against Black bodies and to abolish the systemic racism which oppresses Black freedom.
We have heard the call to de-center white voices at this important moment for the Black Lives Matter movement. We will be postponing the Prison Music Project Sessions: Long Time Gone Album Release Concert to 6/12. All previous ticket purchases will be honored for the new date.
We would also like to offer up the Righteous Babe Radio platform to people of color who may want to use it. This is an open invitation to our Black and brown siblings to send mp3 submissions to radio@righteousbabe.com to be included in our "heavy rotation" playlist.
Ani will be heading on tour through the Western US and Australia in 2020! Presale with password NOWALLS runs for you Righteous Babes on 11/21 from 10am-11:59pm local time (11am AEDT through 9am Monday for Australia shows).

day off in columbia, missouri today... wanted to share this quote:
(thread)
"Pregnancy, entered into willingly, is an act of generosity, a commitment to share the resources of life with another incipient being. Such generosity is in no other circumstances required by law."
"No matter how much you need a kidney donation, the law will not force another person to give you one. Consent, in the form of a donor card, is required even to remove organs from a dead body."
