Ugoretz: Imposter syndrome feels like being a fraud who risks being found out at any moment. It’s like having an inner voice that tells you it’s only a matter of time before you’re found out to be less capable or less qualified than people think you are.
Ugoretz: Someone who has imposter syndrome struggles to internalize and accept their success. They often attribute their accomplishments to luck rather than to ability and fear that others will eventually unmask them as a fraud.
Ugoretz: I’m talking about [imposter syndrome] today because I fear this type of feeling, this nagging inner voice, could be robbing the cyber community of some of the talent, energy, and diversity of voices that we really need.
Ugoretz: If you’re one of the people feeling this way, one of the first steps is to be aware of it. ... Instead of giving in to the feeling and thinking you don’t deserve success, you can remind yourself that it’s normal not to know everything.
Ugoretz: But it’s not enough for us as individuals to work on our own imposter feelings. ... If someone confesses these feelings to you, don’t dismiss them; help them feel they’re not alone. Think of a time that you felt that way that you can share.
Ugoretz: None of us has every skill, quality, or attribute we wish we had—none of us. But none of us has to be everything. ... It’s only by coming together, combining our strengths, that we will build safety, security, and confidence in a digitally connected world.
