LeBron @KingJames is playing his 10th #NBAFinals

Regardless of outcome, he has cemented his legacy as one of the greatest athletes of his generation.

But there is another legacy that many aren't aware of: bringing fine wine into the mainstream.

Thread time 🍷🍷🍷
1/ It may seem contrarian for a superstar NBA athlete to be obsessed with drinking wine.

It feels counterintuitive to performance.

However, his stats, like wine, have only improved with age.
2/ LeBron didn’t even start drinking wine until he was 30.

Now he drinks wine pretty much every day.

(I think this is LeBron’s equivalent of Michael’s Secret Stuff)
3/ Business Insider estimates each of his posts about wine are worth $300,000+.

There have been cases where wines shared to his Insta have soared by 20%+ in price right after.

Talk about a market mover📈
4/ LeBron drinks socially and professionally.

He has taken the Cavs to Napa wineries as a team building exercise.

Here’s him drinking with Dwyane Wade (who owns a winery), Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Paul. Image
5/ Even on winery visits, basketball is never far away.

His approach to understanding every element of the winemaking process is just as thorough as his approach in preparing for each NBA game.
6/ Want to drink like LeBron?

Here are some of the recent wines he’s enjoyed:

Sassicaia
Screaming Eagle 🦅
Domaine du Pégaü
Colgin Cellars
Opus One
Château Pontet-Canet Image

Six years ago, I became a quadriplegic.

Here are 6 essential things I’ve learned since then. Image
1️⃣ People with spinal cord injuries have 20x higher unemployment than non-disabled people.

Limited mobility makes many professions impossible.

I’d personally love to be the next Jeremy Lin, but it’s not happening.
Unemployment Rates:
83.1% for disabled people

3.8% for all Americans

1/ France has long had a stranglehold on the fine wine world.

That grip was broken in a single day.

Here’s story of the most important afternoon in wine history.

👇 👇 👇
2/ Burgundy. Bordeaux. Rhône. Champagne.

These wine regions are titans of the industry.

They’re also all French.

That’s because of a combination of location, history, and prestige.
3/ Wine investors and connoisseurs have gradually realized that other places can make great wine, too.

Australia ➡️ shiraz
Germany ➡️ riesling
Argentina ➡️ malbec
Italy ➡️ Barolo

This broader awareness can be traced back to May 24, 1976.

1/ Chances are you’re drinking your wine wrong.

That’s because there’s a lot of misinformation out there.

It's time to set the record straight.

👇🏼 👇🏼 👇🏼
2/ Myth 1: Different wines need different glasses ⚠️

Stop putting your wines in different glasses.

The right glass works for everything from sherry to shiraz.
3/ The best glasses have a wide opening and thin rim.

A convex shape lets the wine breathe while funneling aromas.

The ones pictured here were designed by the legendary Master of Wine Jancis Robinson herself. Image

1/ How many career changes does it take to find the right job?

For one Napa Valley producer, no answer is too high.

👇🏼 👇🏼 👇🏼
2/ Meet Andy Erickson.

He and his wife Annie are the minds behind Favia Wine.

I’ll circle back to Favia in a moment.

Here’s how he got there. Image
3/ Andy started as a political science major at Tufts.

After college, he worked in San Francisco doing advertising.

Unhappy there, he moved to Argentina to work in wine in the mid-90s.

Put down the corkscrew. You won’t want to drink another wine until you read this.

👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻
You can tell a lot about a wine from its label.

-The country and region
-The grape varieties
-The classification
-The producer
-The ABV
-The vintage

However, what the label says or doesn’t say can make a massive difference.
Red Flag #1 – Vague Regions 🚩

Where the grapes are picked goes hand-in-hand with quality.

If a label just says “California” or “France,” that’s a problem.

It means the producer is probably blending low-quality grapes into the wine.

Poker players succeed by taking calculated risks.

In 1979, a poker player purchased 40 acres in Napa.

That land has produced the most awarded American wines in the last 30 years.

Here’s a story of skill, timing, and a little bit of luck.

👇🏻 👇🏻 👇🏻
2/ Bill Harlan is a Renaissance man.

As a young man, he spent 3 years playing professional poker.

He was good enough that he earned a suite at a Lake Tahoe casino.
3/ That’s just the tip of the iceberg.

Harlan raced motorcycles before graduating to four-wheelers.

He also hitchhiked across 3 continents, sailed the 7 seas, learned to fly single prop planes, and had a career in real estate.
