NEW: At the Arizona border, Native American activists and conservationists told me Trump is fulfilling his campaign promise to build a border wall.
The wall, dismissed by some as “replacement,” is destroying the environment and sacred sites, they say.
“This notion that it's not new really takes away from the fact that this is ripping Arizona and the rest of the borderlands in two,” @LaikenJordahl of @CenterForBioDiv told me in front of an example of old vehicle barrier next to “replacement” wall.
“As far as him failing, no, he didn't fail... he's building the wall... he’s doing exactly what he said he would do,” said B, an Indigenous activist of O’odham Jawed as we overlooked Quitobaquito Springs in @OrganPipeNPS. Its water level has dropped during construction.
Tensions are extremely high along the border with several Indigenous activists arrested in recent weeks and violent clashes between the NPS, Border Patrol and activists.
We were followed by Border Parrol along public roads. CBP admitted it was surveilling us in this statement.
Many people, myself included, have dismissed Trump’s wall building as only nine miles of “new” wall. But it’s *all* making a huge impact on the borderlands, including critical jaguar habitat as @PeccaryNotPig and Randy Serraglio showed us near @CoronadoNF.
Fascinating open source data analysis of water drop we saw at Quitobaquito springs by @obtusatum at @bellingcat. Says CBP claiming it isn't related to Trump wall construction "would seem to conflict with the drought pattern analysis detailed above." bellingcat.com/resources/2020…

Very sorry to hear the @latimes shut its Olympic Printing Plant after 30 years. I toured it in 2007, when I was vlog-reporting for @laobserved. It was amazing and everyone was so welcoming and kind, as you can see.
South Carolina’s remarkable economic growth is changing the electorate. We went inside BMW’s massive plant (where I took a mallet to a $200K car), and to West Greenville, where the Black population has declined as prices force residents out, to learn more.
“Within the next five years, I believe this neighborhood won’t be recognizable by those who once knew it.”
Six years ago, Trump officials held a Valentine's Day meeting in which deliberately separating migrant kids from parents was proposed. Thousands ultimately were.
Two years after creating a task force to reunite them, Biden's DHS says over 600 have been, but 998 remain separated.
Biden admin's task force, led by @MichelleBrane, says the "number of new families identified continues to increase, as families come forward and identify themselves as separated under the previous administration’s zero-tolerance policy." dhs.gov/news/2023/02/0…
Meanwhile, as it reunites families separated by a Trump policy Biden himself called "criminal," his admin is fighting them in court as they seek financial restitution for trauma they endured. Here's just one example, reported by @ElviaMalagon. chicago.suntimes.com/2023/2/1/23579…
This was a truly remarkable story to report and thing to witness. Researchers at @Stanford think they may have discovered a remarkable breakthrough when it comes to treating Parkinson’s patients — and it’s as simple as putting on a pair of gloves.
