COVID Update October 2: Half the states or more are quickly growing cases and people who wear masks aren’t getting as sick.
And we have some absurd stuff going on. 1/
Let’s start with absurd. Mr. Pillow takes an extract from the oleander plant and says with confidence he won’t get COVID-19.
If you see him, stay away just in case. 2/
People visiting the White House like Father Jenkins get told if they take a quick test, they can sit elbow to elbow with others in a Rose Garden ceremony. He did.
Then went back to Notre Dame with a new gift he brought to the campus. COVID. 3/
Three Republican Minnesota Congressmen were exposed to Trump on Air Force One amd boarded a Delta Flight TODAY. This is expressly against airline rules. And human rules.
Emmers, Stauber, Hagedorn shame shame shame. 4/
Scott Atlas, the White House “Scientific” Advisor is feeling his oats, assuring the country that “the President will recover.”
If anyone would be confident enough to know, it would be him. Just the same, I would request a qualified physician if I were the president. 5/
Scott also brazenly said “it is hard not to get the virus.” With all due respect Scott, we’re at our 15th minute. It’s been grand.
Shit has been real for a long time. But now your cavalier approach to people “living” may be even less popular. 6/
The president knew he was exposed to someone with COVID-19. What did he do? Decided to get in a helicopter and go meet with a bunch of donors at his gold course. Only when he started to feel sick, did the charade end. And information began to leak out. 7/
There’s a good chance, the President received an actual positive test a day earlier. Before he left for Bedminster we don’t know. But why wouldn’t he get one after Hope Hicks tested positive? 8/
He changed his tune when? When HE started to feel sick. Otherwise would fundraisers and travel have continued? 9/
The president’s health as a human is nothing for politics.
His office’s disregard for other humans? His policies which deprive the public of the same testing and masks he has access to? That’s important stuff. 10/
There are only 2 possibilities. These people— not Scott Atlas, Donald Trump, Mr Pillow or the Notre Dame President— either don’t understand how COVID transmission works or they don’t care.
There is a third possibility: they don’t care enough to bother to understand. 11/
I put up a special episode about what this means and what needs to happen next. 12/
Half the Republican caucus and the Chair of the RNC are also sick from attending the White House event.
Who wrote the White House protocol, Scott Atlas? 13/
Note to team with the nuclear codes. Maybe get a second password.
This is what happens when an administration throws out everything they inherited. By the way, this is the stuff the deep state does. It’s called expertise. It’s called preventing stupid people from ourselves.14/
But all these stories are about privileged people deciding to be cavalier with something they can’t see, don’t REALLY believe, and mostly affects “other” people.
What about the 43,000 other people diagnosed positive yesterday? 15/
What about all the people with no choice because bloviating anti-maskers come near them or they are in unsafe working conditions?
No I’m not talking about Joe Biden and Chris Wallace. I’m talking about our essential workforce. 16/
Essential workers run into people like Pillow, Jenkins, Atlas, Trump, Lee, Emmers, Stauber, Hagedorn all day long. (I think his name is Pillow, right?)
They go home to older parents who live with them. They work all day. 17/
Their health is already disrespected. The President is suing to take away their care and pre-existing conditions. Wearing a mask around them just for “show.” He’s above that.
What about the rest of us? 18/
Not one more person should die from COVID. End the foolishness and make it stop. /end
“Ron DeSantis is taking the politics of being a bully to a different level,” Sykes tells me. “He’s decided he's going to move as hard and demagogically to the right as he can. He’s learned something from Donald Trump: you don’t need to be a nice guy.” 2/
Sykes says DeSantis is exploiting the culture wars in order to tap into Republicans’ grievances, and that the GOP sees the Florida governor as a “younger, smarter” but equally combative replacement for Trump. But DeSantis stands out from other conservatives for a reason. 3/
Some thoughts on using Twitter:
With Musk inviting back people who use the platform to threaten rape, to lie at scale & become whatever else his whims decide, here are some actions worth considering …
-Mute all advertisers in your feed. I’m not going to be a revenue source & don’t want those who advertise here to be encouraged.
-If you have a lot of followers or post a lot, consider moving the bulk of your content elsewhere. Post looks promising. (I’m @ASlavitt there.)
-I’m also on Mastadon to check it out & until Post is done with its waitlist & will eventually pick one.
-I continue to occasionally check the news feed here & promote things on Twitter minimally & will cross-post for a short time as people decide what they want to do.
COVID Update: It’s time for one as we look ahead to the winter.
The real question is whether we will have another 2021 with a lot of disruption— on a more modest wave— or nothing at all.
There is early data to help answer this question. 1/
Currently there are lots of Omicron sub-variants co-circulating around the globe.
Household names like:
BA.4.6
BQ1.1
XBB
While it’s all a little hard to follow, there’s something interesting about the nature of these variants. 2/
Variants: 1- These are all variants of Omicron. This is good. Better than dealing with a Delta variant emerging. Makes progression more closely resemble the flu. 2- Each are growing in different parts of the world without 1 being dominant. We could have a mix this winter.3/
NEW: COVID vaccines will now be recommended annually, with the flu shot.
I spoke to the White House yesterday about the plan. 1/
Rather than an ad hoc schedule which confuses many as to when to get vaccinated, the thinking is that an annual shot will result in many more people getting vaccinated.
They point to 2/3 of adults who take the flu vaccine vs 1/3 of adults over 50 who have been taking COVID. 2/
We have infrastructure, outreach, and habits that can be capitalized to get people their flu and COVID vaccines together.
This is the prime benefit.
But of course it comes with some questions they are preparing to address. 3/
