I see a lot of parenting advice inside of Christian circles that is “biblical” parenting. And because ppl are indoctrinated to believe biblical=good, abuse is excused under the umbrella of biblical.

Here are a few examples of biblical parenting that are really just abuse:
(1)
Fear is desirable - teaching that God demands “his children” (all of us) to fear him, is translated as Children should be afraid of their parents. It is not normal to be afraid of your parents, people who are afraid of their parents are being abused.
(2)
Punishment, including physical violence, is framed as love - “spare the rod, spoil the child” is not only not in the Bible, it’s also not true. You can’t spoil children, only traumatize them. Correction, boundaries, and accountability are not the same as punishment.
(3)
Discipline is compliance - If the goal is well-behaved children, not well-developed children, then discipline is behavior modification. The goal of parenting is equipping children w/appropriate tools for them to be healthy adults. Behavior modification doesn’t accomplish that
(4)
Obedience is demanded - Even though the word obedience is not really in the Bible, obedience is equated with godliness inside toxic Christianity. Obedience is blind, the goal is to develop critical thinkers not obedient people.
(5)
Guilt and shame are used to manufacture repentance - Making children regret things they’ve done by using guilt and shame is emotional abuse and has nothing to do with repentance.
(6)
Children are taught they are sinners - Convincing children their identity is that of a sinner and they are inherently bad is not only cruel, it’s also unhelpful. Impulse control and naïveté are what’s behind children’s behavior, not sin!
(7)
Hell is used to instill fear - Not only is hell not in the Bible, it is truly horrific to tell kids them and others will end up there unless they believe what you believe. This will set them up to have really bad relationships with themselves and others.
(8)
Children are blamed for Jesus’ death - Telling a child their sin killed Jesus is not only really bad theology, it also leads to deep feelings of shame, guilt and tremendous anxiety.
(9)
Emotions are taught as untrustworthy - This leads to disembodiment and a lot of confusion. Emotions inform us of what’s happening within and learning to feel them, observe them and respond appropriately is imperative.
(10)
Childishness is unacceptable - Childishness is appropriate for children. Childishness is innocence, it’s not wrong or inappropriate. What’s inappropriate and also deeply harmful is asking children to behave like adults.
(11)
If we aim toward biblical parenting, we may miss that the objective of parenting is to support and equip kids so they can become healthy, well-developed, fully functional, whole adults that have appropriate tools to move through this world. Healthy parenting is a far superior aim

I don’t like telling people to vote anymore, the blanket statement seems nonsensical to me considering most of the people that’ll read that are going to vote for a party down the ballot without ever reading what any candidate is for.
(1)
They’ll vote how that party tells them to vote for measures without reading how that measure actually affects people.

In 2018 in the US a dead man won Nevada’s election, in CA a man indicted of dozens of criminal charges including campaign finance crimes won the election,
(2)
and stories like that happen every time. Because people have been told to vote for a certain party, but not to participate critically and honestly in “democracy.”

I honestly believe this is most common amongst Christians.

Sharing about this workshop...

Did you know fatphobia, racism, elitism, xenophobia, and many other harmful biases as we know them today have their roots in Toxic Christianity and inaccurate beliefs that have been passed down using the power of the church and the name of God?
(1) Image
These messages have been internalized by society and dismantling them and divesting from them takes concerted effort.

These are the types of things we will be discussing and learning about in this workshop.
(2)
I am so excited to partner with @OurBibleApp to offer a workshop on Christian supremacy and decolonizing Christianity.

5 weeks, all online, we will interact and together chip away at all the harmful messages we’ve been carrying as truths.

Forgiveness is one of the most weaponized concepts against those who have been harmed and abused. Several Bible verses and doctrines have been used to silence and re-traumatize victims, while they also protect abusers. So we have to keep on setting the record straight:

(1)
Forgiveness is not accepting an apology – You can forgive someone and not accept their apology.

Forgiveness is not meant to eradicate responsibility – You can forgive and people should still be held accountable for their abuse and harm.
(2)
Forgiveness has nothing to do with anger – Anger is a valid emotional response to abuse regardless of forgiveness.

Forgiveness doesn’t mean anything is forgotten – Asking victims to forget or “let go” of abuse/harm is stifling their healing and further abusing them.

Let’s also talk about loving all ppl because churches and Christians that love all people are a dime a dozen, anti-racist ones, hard to find!

When it comes to BIPOC these are the things I need to know:

(1)
*Do you believe racism is both systemic discrimination, and personal biases against someone of a different race?

*Do you believe white people can experience racism?

*Do you believe white supremacy has ever been real? Do you believe it’s real today?

(2)
*Do you believe that historically white ppl were given an advantage over Black ppl and other POC? If yes, do you believe that advantage still exists today?

*Do you believe Black and Native ppl are treated the same way as white people are treated in society?

When my son was about to start pre-school I asked him if he was excited to learn new things, he said he wasn’t, I asked him why and he replied “I already know everything.”
(1)
This is funny and endearing when it comes from a 3 year old, but when adults behave that same way, it’s not funny anymore, but a sign of immaturity and arrogance.
(2)
Inside Toxic Christianity, and supremacy culture, there is no room for admitting ignorance, because to claim your faith is superior, you also have to have a faith that provides all answers. The problem is faith isn’t about answers; certainty is the anti-thesis of faith.

I was 24 years old the first time I cut my hair w/out permission.

I was 34 years old the first time I booked a trip w/out permission.

I was 34 years old when I started speaking my mind w/out permission. Scared still that “they” would come to tell me I couldn’t do this.
(1)
I was 34 years old when I started wearing things because I liked them, not because they were acceptable. My brain will still sometimes ask “is this appropriate” instead of “do you like this”

I was 35 years old the first time I left a church without permission.
(2)
I have never moved homes without permission. Never moved cities without permission. I would right now, the opportunity just hasn’t been there.
