National security experts describe a distracted and potentially vulnerable country. Notable insights: ⁦1/ washingtonpost.com/national-secur…
@NicholasRasmu15: “I see weakness & division & above all else distractedness...Any problem anywhere else is just a 3rd-or 4th-order problem right now because we are so self-absorbed, inward looking & consumed with our own toxicity. & when you’re distracted, you make mistakes.” 2/
☝️@NicholasRasmu15 is right. Sadly this is an accurate description of not just the last few days, but the last 3 1/2 years.
@jmclaughlinSAIS: “In a normal government, you could probably absorb some of this dysfunction, but this government, on national security policy, has had a very sketchy — to say the least — process for making foreign policy decisions.” 👈Agree, but I’d argue there is no process.
Also true: @jmclaughlinSAIS: “People can have confidence that the U.S. mil. & intel. community at a professional level are doing their jobs & keeping an eye on everything & sounding alarms that need to be sounded...But into what environment? A very distracted & confused one...”

Words matter. If you’ve been raised in the pro-life movement, you’re likely familiar w/ the US’s disturbing eugenics history. Trump’s racehorse theory is the precursor to eugenics and Holocaust. Article makes clear he actually believes it. Evil. latimes.com/politics/story…
"Rob Eshman, the former editor of the Jewish Journal who is now the national editor of the influential Jewish American online newspaper the Forward, said Trump’s language was a clear signal to his supporters who harbor racist or anti-Semitic views...."
"Racehorse theory “is basically like a forerunner to eugenics theory, which led to the Nazis’ ‘final solution,’” Eshman said after Trump’s Minnesota comments. “It’s one of the least coded messages he has sent.”" 3/4

Thread. As others have said, we can both wish Trump well & hold him accountable for his negligent and reckless behavior that has led to 100K unnecessarily dying and even more millions getting ill. 1/
I pray for the President’s recovery. I also pray (though I think it unlikely) that this experience would humble him & cause him to recognize the mistakes he has made in handling this national emergency. Despite what he has implied, we are still in the middle of this pandemic.2/
Please stop the political tinkering; allow the health and emergency management experts to do their jobs. 3/

Someone asked for info on Proud Boys...see link from ADL. Highlights: “unconventional strain of American right-wing extremism. While the group can be described as violent, nationalistic, Islamophobic, transphobic and misogynistic, ... /1 adl.org/resources/back…

...In McInnes’ own words, the Proud Boys are a “pro-western fraternity,” essentially a drinking club dedicated to male bonding, socializing and the celebration all things related to western culture. In reality, the Proud Boys bear many of the hallmarks of a gang... 3/

/1 - It's late. I'd love to put this debacle of a debate behind me, but I feel compelled to underscore the danger we're facing. As a Mom, I struggle w/ explaining to my children they should respect the President & pray for him as God instructs us, but not imitate his behavior.
/2 - I have limited my public commentary to those things which I have first hand knowledge, and those things which pose a danger to our country. (Sure there are other stories of the chaos & craziness, but that's not my purpose in speaking out.)
/3 - POTUS' comments tonight fall into both the 'first-hand' and 'dangerous' category. I served at DHS as the Asst Secretary for Counterterrorism from 2018-2020. The surge of violent white nationalism happened on my watch.

1/ There are many reasons to be disturbed by the NYT story on Trump’s taxes. The national security implications, however deserve to be deeply examined. I have no doubt journalists and commentators are working on those stories right now. To get you started, how about facts:

Well said @MJGerson : "Cultivating fear of the coming melanin invasion is now the defining theme of the Trump campaign. It is also the rawest recourse to bigotry on the national stage since Alabama Gov. George Wallace in the 1960s and ’70s... /1 washingtonpost.com/opinions/white…
