Our @pc4quality study just published in @PedCritCareMed is one of my favorites I've ever written. Here's why (trainees and junior faculty take note)...

journals.lww.com/pccmjournal/Fu…
It all has to do with @SydneyRooney5, the amazing @SarnoffCardio fellow I got to work with. She's from @PittPediatrics @CHPPedSDP @ChildrensPGH @residentsofchp

Get to know her name. She's gonna be a mega star...
This study was originally conceived by a colleague at another institution, and @SydneyRooney5 worked on the data management as part of her research fellowship training. She did a great job with that and was going to be a middle author on the paper...
Well, the primary investigator decided to leave academic medicine for private industry. The study was orphaned. We thought it was a pretty important study; one of those rare instances where any finding (diff or no diff) would be really informative...
In her last month before beginning her Peds Residency @residentsofchp - between end of med school and start of intern year - @SydneyRooney5 volunteered to pick up the flag and take the study forward. No one would have blamed her for putting her feet up for a few weeks...
She proceeded to read all the background literature and familiarize herself with the methods and analysis. She then wrote the manuscript during that time and her intern rotations at night and on weekends. She became an expert really quick on the subject matter...
She wrote a beautiful paper and needed comparatively little steering by me and the other senior author, Chris Mastropietro (no Twitter handle!) from @RileyChildrens This kind of initiative AND aptitude in the same person is rare. Unicorn-like...
So it is such a pleasure to see it published and know it's the result of an incredible mentee who will go on to do amazing things in academic medicine. She's a sure thing and if any investigators in #pedsICU or #pedsCICU get an email from her about collaborating, answer it!...
The lesson to younger members of the field: there is NO substitute for showing that you are a finisher. When I interview fellowship candidates, or meet with potential mentees and collaborators, the drive to complete the work is the single most important attribute...
I look for. If you can prove that you'll finish a project on time, no matter the barriers, many more opportunities will come your way. Thanks @PedCritCareMed for publishing our study. I hope you enjoy the paper. It brought great pleasure to the senior members of the team...
watching a young investigator flourish. cc: @drklugs
