Suspend and Disband the Committee for Reforms in Criminal Laws with immediate effect and ensure that any subsequent reform process complies with national and international best practices so as to further our constitutional goals of justice, equality and liberty. @citizensspeakup
Main concerns are: 1. COMPREHENSIVE LEGAL REFORM CANNOT BE UNDERTAKEN WHILE THE COUNTRY IS IN THE GRIP OF THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC. @P39A_nlud@citizensspeakup
2. MANDATE OF THE COMMITTEE AND LACK OF TRANSPARENCY:
The Committee has failed to publish its Terms of Reference. Unlike other law reform bodies, the Committee has not revealed what consultation, research and analysis precedes and underpins its six consultative questionnaires.
3. LACK OF DIVERSITY: Committee appears to include no representation from the communities that bear the brunt of our failing criminal justice system, including those oppressed by their caste, ethnicity, disability, class, religion or gender.
4. NO POSSIBILITY OF EFFECTIVE PUBLIC PARTICIPATION:
Committee’s public consultation process is exclusionary,to participate in the consultation, one must download questionnaires from the Committee’s website and submit responses online after registering only in English
