With the eyes of the nation on Utah, let me tell you how rotten and profoundly corrupt Utah’s deep, dark red Republican government truly is 1/
It is so corrupt Republican electeds don’t see their rottenness. Here Utah’s Governor compares self to “Available Jones”, from comic “Li’l Abner”. Jones was a sleazy lawyer who would do anything for money 2/
Here I laid out how “The Golden Rule” in Utah politics works: Those who have the gold make the rules.
All perfectly legal, but corrupt as hell 3/
Here’s how Utah government squanders tens of millions every year to satisfy their rich donor buddies ... 4/
...while Utah remains dead last in per-pupil spending, even beating out Mississippi 5/
Utah RWers have embraced Trump’s no-mask bravado and married it to their second-favorite religion: greed. Predictably, Utah is now one of the world’s COVID hot spots 6/
Early in the pandemic Utah did pretty well. We were lucky. Then Gov Herbert and Lt. Gov Cox caved to pressure from legislators (who are owned by who, again?) and opened up too soon. Went from 10s of infections per day to 1000, and getting worse 7/
Reminder: you can actually go see who owns Utah’s legislators 8/
Utah Repubs love to brag on being recognized as “Best Run State” (most easily bought by corporations) by certain business mags, but are blind to surveys which find Utah #1
in:
Gender inequality
Fraud
Internet porn use 9/
I love Utah—it’s breathtaking landscapes and wonderful, generous people—and am proud to show them off to the rest of the nation. But we deserve better than the narrow, parochial, patriarchal “elite” running the state 10/
I could go on (and maybe will, later)
11/end?

Back in Bush W era, knew Nazi comparisons were an immediate conversation killer. So I read everything I could get my hands on about another European country that went fascist at same time, just to understand process 1/
Spain. The Spanish Civil War,
Spain in Their Hearts, Looking for Trouble, Homage to Catalonia (a recollection by George Orwell, who fought on the Republican side--more on that later) are good books to start 2/
I chose the Spanish Civil War (1933-1936) because Americans know nothing about it. It is about how Spain was held under fascist dictatorship for four decades. The Bad Guys won 3/
If you see the end goal is to create a Christian "Republic", the amorality of Trumpers makes a little sense. Anything to advance that goal—lie, cheat, decieve—is OK because they're engaged in "unseen warfare" against the enemies of God, and who is honest with an enemy? 1/
My Mormon ancestors made no bones about being at war with "Babylon" (understood as the wicked/depraved, i.e. anybody not Mormon). Played game of cat and mouse with Federal authority until crackdown on polygamy threatened Church w insolvency. Church caved in 1890. Kind of. 2/
Polygamy was still secretly practiced w approval of leaders for another 20 years, but repeatedly lied about it, even after another "Manifesto" in 1904. Why? Because it's OK to lie to the wicked. You don't give away God's battle plans to the enemy (Satan) 3/
John Oliver just did a great show on Bob Murray, the mine operater who got 9 miners killed in Utah disaster because he is greedy--ignored mine safety regs. 1/
Murray is a rotten, despicable human being. I remember Crandall Mine Disaster and how he sequestered families of victims, telling them press was their enemy 2/
His real aim was to keep public uninformed about corner-cutting in his mines. He pretended to be miner's advocate while quashing family's questions 3/
90% of Utah's legislators are LDS tho only 60% of the state is Mormon. So, what gives? 1/ sltrib.com/news/politics/…
It looks even worse when you add in "inactive" Mormons—those who are on the books but don't practice; about half. So 30% of Utahns dictate a lion's share of legislative seats. How do they do it? 2/
They're organized. Every ward (congregation) is a Republican farm team. Members of wards are taught deference to authority and leadership positions can become springboards for elective office. 3/
