We're running three free webinars on conflict verification, focusing on the Karabakh conflict.

The first will be in English (w/ @AricToler) on Friday: events.eventzilla.net/e/free-conflic…
The second in Armenian (led by @narin_kh) next Tuesday (link coming soon).
The third in Russian (TBD).
Please only sign up for one, picking the language you are most comfortable with!

The Russian-language training is tentatively with @aiganysh_aidar and likely be next week as well. We'll share links to all three webinars once we get them up and running.

Only 30 people per event.
The content of each webinar -- focusing on basic verification methodologies and geolocation around photos/videos coming out of the conflict -- will be the same, just in different languages.

Today in Germany we have the start of the trial of a Russian citizen for the murder of Zelimkhan Khangoshvili in Berlin, a case Bellingcat did a significant amount of investigation into, revealing Russian intelligence link to the assassination.

Environmental advocates and the Tohono O’odham Nation are sure that construction of
President Trump’s border wall, which is happening close to the springs, is strongly linked to the fall in water levels. Yet federal agencies say otherwise.
In this piece, Bellingcat's Tech Team was able to show that the loss of water is without recent precedent by analysing Sentinel-2 imagery and climatological data.

Could U.S.-led coalition airstrikes in 2018 have hit hospitals or makeshift medical facilities in Syria?

@ExtranjeroTruth @Soph_Timmermann A number of local media reports, and international monitoring groups, previously suggested coalition strikes were responsible for damaging medical sites in Deir ez-Zor Governarate in 2018.
@ExtranjeroTruth @Soph_Timmermann But this has been contested by the coalition. When contacted by Bellingcat with details of the strikes in question, they said the reports were “not credible.”

.@iwriteok and @jason_a_w have obtained several months of chat logs from the Patriot Coalition of Oregon, a network of pro-Trump, pro-police activists, which detail plans for violence in the streets of Portland bellingcat.com/news/2020/09/2…
The logs were provided by an infiltrator affiliated with the antifascist collective Eugene Antifa and provide an intimate look inside a growing insurgent network.
Topics of conversation include celebration of acts of thuggery and even discussions about harming elected leaders and journalists.

BREAKING: New details from the 2015 attempt by Russia's military intelligence to kill Bulgarian citizens with a Novichok-like substance allowed us to make a play-by-play reconstruction of an actual GRU poisoning operation.

Previously we had identified 8 officers from the GRU’s elite "clandestine overseas operations" unit who traveled under fake identities to Bulgaria in early 2015 during a time when three Bulgarian citizens were poisoned with an unidentifiable substance. bellingcat.com/news/uk-and-eu…
In 2015, the poisonings had remained unresolved. A privately-commissioned analysis at an OPCW-certified lab in Finland had found traces of an unknown substance from the organophoshate family. The world didn't yet know that Novichok was back.

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 launched last week, giving players a 1:1 scale of the world in which to play.

And we explored how accurate this simulated Earth is to see if it could be useful for open source research!

The bad news: We found that while the game's AI-generated building models worked remarkably well, they're not accurate enough to aid in geolocation.

BUT — we also took a look at other features, like the game's ability to render topography. Image
On the topography front, the game performed much more impressively.

Flight Simulator 2020 is able to render beautiful vistas with life-like realism. We compared a couple of sites with Google Earth Pro to see the difference, including one in these images of Lake Louise, Alberta. ImageImage
