I have worked for the Internet Archive for 9.7 years, and have visited 3 scanning centers personally, seen photos and video from a half dozen more. The working conditions are entirely fine. It is a boring job but no more or less boring than any cataloging job is.
In the photos and videos (as well as the personal visits) the temperature, lighting, and arrangements are all like working in a standard office. The noise level is flipping pages by a dozen or more people wearing headphones. Instructions and metrics are clear.
If a good friend, follower or person DMing me told me they were applying for the job, I would tell them it's a service level job like doing inventory or data entry, but I would feel entirely comfortable telling them to go for it.

Need a very vicious battle fighting for very low stakes for a change? There's this complete jerk in the Interactive Fiction world who's been on a years and years-long tear to debase and criticize a rotating set of targets who he puts forward as tyrants of adventure games. Image
Now, he's been at this for YEARS, well over half a decade, with the fervent energy of the truly misguided and the pettiness of someone who got splashed by a car driving past when he was 18. The seething closing-eye stare of walking to a store display as the last item is taken. Image
Anyway, he waited for the latest IF Competition to be underway, sent an essentially forged e-mail to all the competitors and others he can find, making all sorts of claims with the voice and heft of "V" from "V for Vendatta".

So, today's a very special day! We've compiled the new WASM/JS emulators from MAME 0.225 (a few days after release) and I'm going to plug them in (after backing up the previous ones) and run testing against them to find what breaks.

Some games may temporarily stop working.
But if this works, this automates a LOT of what the archive emulates, and following MAME closely means both newest advancements arrive, but also that bugfixes/improvements can happy because the team can see the work directly reflected at IA.

Here's hoping!

Or that when it happened, suddenly the court of lackeys that surrounded the King started demanding THEY get the same operation whether they needed it or not, and took to wearing bandages in homage to the brave king going through medical procedures

Besides The Fido Book (previous tweet) I was also handed two other BBS-era writings from Sven Wallin/Wynn Wagner III's estate: The Opus Technical Reference Manual and the Opus Sysop Operations Manuals. Both are spectacular. Here's Sven and his husband Rick, both gone.
Wynn told me he was accused of his works not being "serious", and he insisted in our interview that his credo was "Serious does not mean SOLEMN" and these manuals by Trev Roydhouse (which Wynn oversaw) reflect that.

The Technical Reference Manual has some of the absolutely best documentation on the Fidonet system I've ever seen - now primarily a historical reference, because Fido is very small these days. But what detail!

For my friends outside the US who are always fascinated/horrified when I go into the costs of healthcare related to my various heart things. I just swapped up my health plan and here's what I'm paying twice a month:
So that's $441.08 a month out of the paycheck, the company pays a bunch too, and that gives me decent health insurance by US standards. You need to understand a "deductible", which means "the amount you pay before the insurance kicks in". Mine is something like $3000.
In general, unless I get surgery, I won't get that. There's deductibles for medicine (I'll pay $10 for multi-hundred dollar don't die drugs) and visits (I'll pay $25 to visit my physician, more for my heart specialist). I am entirely fine with all of this - just sharing.
