EXCL: Woody Johnson, the billionaire US ambassador to the UK, spent more than £1,000 on golf and dinner in a single day during a three-night stay at Donald Trump’s Scottish resort - and American taxpayers picked up the bill. My @TheScotsman story: scotsman.com/news/politics/…
If you're unaware of the ties between Trump and his extraordinarily wealthy ambassador to the UK, here's an accompanying article detailing their longstanding social connections. It includes a wig-themed birthday party. Forewarned is forearmed etc. scotsman.com/news/politics/…
Folk in the US may not be aware how Trump's Turnberry resort has discovered a rich new seam of revenue during his presidency. So here's a recap of how his flagship Scottish property is reaping plenty of US taxpayer dollars - while still running at a loss: scotsman.com/news/politics/…
The details of Woody Johnson's wee trip to Turnberry reached me via the fine folk at @weareoversight, who do sterling work with FOIA and lawsuits to obtain something that's proven elusive in the past four years - the truth. Give them a follow, and look into their work.
So sure, the sums involved here - £1,143 - aren't major. But the receipts for Johnson's stay at Turnberry cover just one day, and he stayed at Trump's resort for three nights. And the bill doesn't include the accommodation costs. The ambassador and his wife rented two rooms.
£1,143 might be a lot to you. It is to me. How would billionaires characterise it? Pocket change? For me, the key to this story is the transactional arrogance - a billionaire ambassador billing the US public for his stay at a billionaire president's heavily-indebted resort.
But don't let the sums involved obscure other issues at play. Trump was in the UK on a working visit, but his stay at Turnberry - when Johnson joined him - was described as a "private visit." While there, Trump played two rounds of golf, and took in a World Cup football match.
As my prolific Twitter pal @waltshaub points out, how could this be classified as official travel on the part of a US ambassador if the president was on a private visit to his own resort?
Anyway, back to Ambassador Johnson. Here's the one-page receipt detailing his expenditure on *one day* of his stay at Trump's property. Isn't 'golf retail' a deliciously ambiguous phrase? Image
I asked the US embassy in London a series of questions in recent days, including why Ambassador Johnson stayed at Turnberry longer than Trump himself; why the receipt accounts for just one day of his trip; and whether he repaid any of the itemised expenditure.
A spokesman for the US embassy replied: “Ambassador Johnson has complied with all US government travel regulations.” I’ve asked to see those regulations and how they pertain to Mr Johnson’s trip. I’m still waiting.
While I'm waiting, it's worth highlighting other potential conflicts of interest involving Trump and his ambassador, who's an heir to the big pharma fortune of Johnson & Johnson, the firm which received $1bn from the Trump admin for 100m doses of its potential Covid-19 vaccine.
It was only three months ago - yeah, I know, it feels like three decades - but do you remember this @nytimes report alleging how Trump asked Ambassador Johnson to help secure the lucrative Open championship for his loss-making Turnberry resort? nytimes.com/2020/07/21/wor…
Or perhaps you recall the concise report by the brill @Z_Everson, detailing how Ambassador Johnson's NFL team held a golf outing at Trump's NJ resort?: 1100pennsylvania.substack.com/p/us-ambassado…
The Trump presidency is, in part, a story about the tension between public office & private interests. IMO, Ambassador Johnson's stay at Turnberry - though relatively insignificant monetarily - is a stark example. It's about ordinary folk picking up the bill for billionaires.
Thanks for reading, and if you're so inclined, please support my reporting by subscribing to @TheScotsman from just £3 a month. It's increasingly challenging to find the time and resources to pursue investigative reporting. But I can't do anything else. bit.ly/3cZaoC2

At #FMQs, @AlisonJohnstone raises the closure of a @EdinburghUni Covid-19 testing lab - as revealed in today's @TheScotsman👇- saying that the decision to deploy testing to the full is a @scotgov policy choice which contradicts @WHO guidance.

scotsman.com/news/politics/…
.@NicolaSturgeon says the lab was never designed as a "permanent provision," and that the @scotgov is developing regional hubs to provide long-term capacity. (NB - is developing, not *has developed*)
.@AlisonJohnstone says the @scotgov strategy is outdated, and says Scottish universities are falling behind when it comes to testing. FM replies that testing strategy is subject to constant review.

New NYT Trump tax report highlights Qs around his financing in 2011, when Apprentice & licensing $ began to dry up. But Trump was repeatedly asking a foreign bank for funding as early as *2008* when those $ streams were rising. My analysis for @TheScotsman scotsman.com/news/politics/…
The NYT's superb infographic lays out the ebb and flow of Trump's finances. What's clear is that in 2008, his income from Trump Org, Apprentice, licensing etc were all v buoyant: nytimes.com/interactive/20…
Which begs the Q why Trump, having met two Scottish bankers at Trump Tower, wrote to the Bank of Scotland repeatedly asking it for financing. Sometimes it was as high as £38m, sometimes s low as £9m. Either way, these are modest sums for someone of Trump's claimed wealth.

Nicola Sturgeon announces nationwide restrictions on people visiting other households across Scotland as part of measures to stem renewed spread of Covid-19.
"We are determined to keep schools open and young people in education," FM says, adding that plans are in place restart other NHS services, and keep business trading as normally "as is feasible."
New restrictions are "tough, yet more "targeted," FM says, and do not represent a "full scale lockdown."

EXCL The Trump Org is planning a new "world class coastal retreat" in Scotland. It says it'll meet growing demand for "investment opportunities" & mark its entry into the retirement property market. But there are Qs over the development & Trump's finances. scotsman.com/news/uk-news/r…
Here’s a thread, with pics by my colleague @2point8_photos, spelling out some of the issues in play. The most obvious one is that this retreat, if approved, would represent one of the most ambitious and expensive projects undertaken by Trump’s firm since he became president.
It would also offer an unprecedented opportunity for individuals, investors & companies to buy into Trump Org’s vision of hundreds of properties peppering a picturesque part of Scotland's west coast - further stoking tensions between Trump’s private interests & his public office

NEW: The Trump Org has submitted plans to alter and extend the hotel building at its Turnberry resort to incorporate an “outdoor activity centre.” It will include a children’s play area, a room for teenagers, and adjoining it, a ‘gun station’
Why a gun station? As well as its golf courses, spa, restaurants, etc, Trump Turnberry offers various hunting packages, as well as shotgun clay shooting.
The centre has yet to be approved by @southayrshire, though accounts signed by @EricTrump state it’ll be built this year. In its
submission, Trump’s consultants say the centre “may further enhance” Turnberry’s prospects of hosting the Open championship (it last did so in 2009)

EXC: The Trump Org has lost its exclusive rights to one of its prized assets - the Trump name - for real estate development & golf accessories after an EU ruling. Filings by its attorneys show a sharp fall in golf biz at POTUS's Turnberry resort. Thread👇 scotsman.com/news/uk-news/r…
Nine of @realDonaldTrump’s prized EU trademarks have been subject to a drawn out legal dispute going back two years. The potential ramifications are considerable. Forget bricks and mortar - Trump has made millions of $ licensing his name, all built on intellectual property rights
Heads up from the get-go. This story involves complex - and let's face it, dry and obtuse - issues. But trademarks, and the exclusivity they confer on licensing rights, are key to @realDonaldTrump's private business empire. It's not a sexy story, but it matters a great deal.
