One man became the most recognizable name in the history of football without ever actually playing in an NFL game.

The most interesting part?

He made hundreds of millions of dollars doing it.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
1) John Madden, born in Minnesota but raised in California, grew up in a blue-collar family.

In high school, Madden was a star football, basketball and baseball player.

When college came, Madden couldn't give it up — attending the college of San Mateo as a two-sport athlete.
2) John Madden entered college with one simple goal — to play professional football.

After transferring 3 times in a 4-year period, Madden was selected by the Eagles as the 244th pick of the 1958 draft.

Unfortunately, Madden hurt his knee in preseason which ended his career.
3) Similar to everything else in his life, John Madden wouldn't let his career ending injury define him.

With a love for football and a degree in education, Madden kicked off his coaching career as an assistant at little-known Allan Hancock College.
4) Through a notorious attention to detail, John Madden immediately started to make a name for himself in coaching.

Within 7 years of starting at the unknown Allan Hancock College, Madden was hired by the legendary Al Davis as linebackers coach for the Oakland Raiders.
5) After just two years as an assistant with the Oakland Raiders, John Madden was named Head Coach - the youngest in league history at 32.

Resume
- 103-32-7 record
- Super Bowl XI Champion
- .763 winning percentage (2nd best all-time)

Now this is where it gets interesting…
6) Citing occupational burnout, John Madden retired from coaching in 1978 — accepting an NFL commentator position a year later.

Madden loved commentating, and was good at it, but that's not what he's known for.

His big break?

When EA Sports approached him in 1982 with an idea.
7) After being turned down by Joe Montana, EA Sports approached John Madden in 1982 with the idea of creating a video game.

Skeptical at first, Madden eventually agreed as he saw it as a way to educate fans on the game of football.

The only problem?

Madden is a perfectionist.
8) EA Sports spent years working on a prototype, only to have John Madden shut it down immediately.

Upset it was 7v7 football, and didn't integrate his NFL playbook, Madden made them start over.

Seven years, and many revisions later, "John Madden Football" released in 1988.
9) Since its release in 1988, the "Madden" franchise has sold over 130M copies - generating an estimated $4 billion in revenue.

The best part?

In 2005, John Madden agreed to license his name and likeness in perpetuity for a reported $150M & ~$5M in annual endorsement fees.
10) John Madden is one of the greatest coaches in NFL history, yet it's estimated that less than 10% of his $400M net worth came from coaching.

Point being - pursue your dreams with a relentless passion, but always be open to new opportunities.

Jon Cooper, as head coach of the Tampa Bay Lightning, just won the Stanley Cup.

His journey to get there?

You won't even believe it.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
1) Jon Cooper, born and raised in British Columbia, grew up with one dream in mind.

"I wanted my name engraved on the Stanley Cup"

As he got older, those dreams started to fade.

Cooper was better at lacrosse than hockey, going on to play the former at Hofstra university. Image
2) At Hofstra, despite proving himself as an exceptional lacrosse player, Jon Cooper couldn't shake his love for hockey.

Cooper was notorious for checking box scores and obsessing over every NHL transaction.

"I read the sports page front to back, no matter how long it took.”

One sports professional is wealthier than James Harden, Conor McGregor, and Steph Curry...combined.

Yet he never played in a game, owned a team, or ever displayed any athletic ability.

Here is his mind-blowing story...

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
1) Michael Buffer, born in Philadelphia, was raised by a foster family after his parents divorced when he was a child.

As a 20 year old, Buffer enlisted in the US Army during the Vietnam War — serving 3 years in total.

Buffer would go on to pursue a career in modeling & acting.
2) From age 23, Michael Buffer spent the next 15 years selling cars, acting, and modeling — never finding his true passion.

That all changed in the early 1980s when Buffer was watching a boxing match with his 14-year old son.

This is where it gets interesting…

Most people say they are willing to do whatever it takes, regardless of what others think, to be successful — but are they really?

One athlete epitomized this concept.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
1) Rick Barry, who spent time in both the NBA & ABA, retired in 1980 as one of the most prolific scorers in basketball history.

Resume
- 12x All-Star
- Over 25,000 Points
- 9x All-NBA/ABA 1st Team

The most interesting part?

He's remembered for something much more unique.
2) Despite being an excellent player, Rick Barry struggled with free throws in high school.

His father recommended he start shooting them underhanded, but Barry was concerned he would be made fun of.

His dad's response?

"They can't make fun of you if you're making them.”

From Bill Russell to Lebron James, the NBA Finals has produced some legendary performances.

Here are 5 of my favorite mind-blowing NBA Finals facts.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
1) Magic Johnson, one of the best point guards of all time, cemented his legacy throughout his NBA Finals career.

Magic is the only player in NBA history to average 12+ assists per game in the NBA Finals.

The craziest part?

He did it 6 times.
2) Robert Horry, one of the best role players ever, is the only player in NBA history to win multiple championships with 3 different teams.

Rockets – 2 (’94, ’95)
Lakers – 3 (’00, ’01, ’02)
Spurs – 2 (’05, ’07)

The part you didn't know?

He's on his way to joining an elite club of basketball billionaires.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇

In High School, now 6'7", Durant established himself as one of the best players in the country.

When the Miami Heat tip off the NBA Finals on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Lakers, they'll be significant underdogs.

The craziest part?

Their entire roster is used to it.

Time for a thread 👇👇👇
1) Head coach Eric Spoelstra started his Miami Heat career as a video coordinator back in 1995.

Since then, he's worked his way from the video room to 3x NBA Champion and is regarded as one of the best coaches in the NBA today.

The lesson?

Keep going.
2) When it comes to Jimmy Butler, you couldn't make up his story if you tried.

- Homeless at 13
- 73rd ranked SG in Texas
- No D1 offers, attended JuCo
- Last pick of 1st round

Now, Butler is a 4x all-star with $220M in career earnings - looking to win his 1st NBA championship.
