ENDORSEMENT: We typically avoid endorsing candidates unless they will have a direct impact on the future of housing, sprawl and the environment in our region and differ significantly from their opponent. This is why we wholeheartedly endorse @lawsonremer. 1/
We have spent several hours interviewing both candidates. And for @KristinDGaspar, we also have an extensive voting record that shows that she will continue to make bad decisions when it comes to smart planning, environmental stewardship and climate change. 2/
Supervisor @KristinDGaspar has been on the wrong side of most every decision the Board has had to make when it comes to sprawl development and environment. She has supported every GP amending project including Newland Sierra, Otay Village 13, HG Village South, Valiano and more. 3
All of these projects have been subject to lawsuits by environmental groups, 2 have lost in the courts and 1 was voted down by voters countywide (Newland). The courts agreed that projects violate GHG mandates, create untenable risks of wildfire and lack affordable housing. 4/
When Lilac Hills came to the board with a unprecedented recommendation for denial from staff & County fire, she sided with Desmond in trying to salvage the bad project. She ultimately voted NO when it was clear it wouldn't pass -- the first project to be rejected by the Board. 5/
She also has repeatedly voted to support the flawed, legally rejected Climate Action Plans including spending taxpayer dollars appealing multiple rulings against the County. It is not clear she believes in climate change which is not referenced in any campaign materials. /6
Gaspar doesn't even mention sprawl on her website, though she acknowledged it was "not ideal" in our interview. She is backed by the BIA as well as the biggest sprawl developers in the county including those seeking approvals of thousands of units in "very high" fire zones. /7
On the other hand, @lawsonremer has spoken eloquently about limiting sprawl, building smartly, respecting open space, our climate and the communities. She's proposed clear plans to do so. She has a strong commitment to the environment, open space and equitable, safe land use. /8
If you care about smart land use, the environment and growing our region in a responsible, sustainable fashion while protecting the open space and habitat that makes this region so special, please consider voting for @lawsonremer for District 2 Board of Supervisors.
