When you get fed up of Apple's unreliable hw (2 laptops in 3 years, both broke), shitty keyboard, wtf touchbar and so on 😀 Image
Hello darkness my old friend #windows Image
The whole setup process is very nice and Apple like so far. There is #Cortana telling you what to do and even throwing funny (!) joke once in a while. You can also interact with voice, eg just say yes instead of pressing confirm button. Image
Nice, the whole setup was done very quickly. No more install "updates for hours" before you can start your computer for the first time Image
There is app that lets you connect your phone to the pc and do cool stuff with it. It can do basic interactions (show messages or last images) or even stream phone to your pc (and fully controll it from pc!).
Feels futuristic. Image
And of course, cross device copy paste. So basically what Apple has with their Macbook - iPhone interaction, but better? Image
Yep, good old Windows, most likely stuck, but tells you, for an hour, that it is preparing and that you should not restart it. Image
Omfg, first terminal I have ever seen to get right ctrl+backspace (delete "word") and it is default terminal in #windows?
New #windows package manager (still in beta, 1.0 expected in 2021). #notbad Image
Nice, there are official power user tools that have
- color picker
- explorer addons for live preview of markdown and svg
- image resizer
- keyboard manager
- and of course, ripoff of MacOS Spotlight :D

Updates still take forever. This is like 3rd time I see 30+ min update restart today.
On the other hand, if I did not need power user features (wls2), I would probably see this only once or it would happen at the night automatically. Image
WSL2 setup not really seamless (multiple powershell commands + reboot), on the other hand -> downloading Ubuntu from #Windows store seems unreal 😀 Image
I expected nothing from Windows hello, but on Surface it works really well. It is super fast and works even on weirder angels.
Ok, #WSL2 is super legit. Just got non trivial project running pretty quickly.

In WSL2: Scala server, Node Webpack dev server, Postgres
In Windows: DBeaver connected to the WSL Postgress, Chrome connected to WSL dev server, VSCode running the WSL terminals Image
And most importantly, there was no configuration that you needed to setup or anything.
You just open terminal in #WSL, start server on localhost:8080 in the Ubuntu, and the localhost:8080 is accessible in the #Windows automatically. File systems are also connected automatically Image
Charging the #Surface with MacBook usbc charger 😀, because there is proprietary charging connector and I am using hub anyway.

Few minor WLS2 annoyances
- Services does not seem to stay up after system restart
- Mongo was using some outdated postinstall script approach, that WLS2 did not like, so I had to setup some file manually, instead of doing simple apt-get install
I have to say, I am impressed with the new #windows #winget package manage. It is still barebones (no uninstall command for example😁) but I think I installed everything through it (VSCode, Spotify, DBeaver, VLC). I don't remember downloading some .exe file from the internet.
Ah, the good old "connect something and it automatically appears as an HD". On MacOS you needed to download "Android File Transfer" which, even though it was official Android utility, was super buggy.
Here you just plug it in and it works. Image
