Find out what the tiers mean and who they affect: trib.al/Em1hYAt
Boris Johnson yesterday divided the country into 'medium', 'high' or 'very high' coronavirus alert sectors amid a tightening of lockdown rules that could last until Christmas...
...and this graphic shows how those alert sectors are broken down:
Here are the biggest changes so far:
+ Liverpool is the only area to face a full socialising ban
+ Areas that already had local lockdowns will continue on middle 'High' alert
+ All of the South East and South West will retain current rules
And this table shows exactly how the new alert levels will affect people in each area...
Why is this being done now?
++ The UK was fourth in the world in terms of its Covid cases last week
++ Infections are up 10.9% and deaths are up 163.2%, although the latter are significantly lower than the peak in April
++ Local political leaders have warned about the extent of the lockdown and financial support available
++ Sir Keir Starmer said he is 'sceptical' whether the Government has a plan to get control of the virus
++ Increased testing of health staff in hotspot areas
++ The temporary Nightingale hospitals in Manchester, Sunderland and Harrogate are being mobilised
