Recollect the chaos and controversy during the relase of Maniratnam's BOMBAY is 1995...

This film was banned/censored/released with limitations due to a major factor...that it was released in the backdrop of the 1993 Mumbai riots.

.....

However, Mumbai's riots was the part of the climax of the film and it did not precisely have the "Mumbai Riots" as the basic plot.
It showed that love has no boundaries, if it is pure and divine..religion doesn't matter.
It showed reactions of two families from different faiths..

.facing the dilemma when their children are in love with the partner being from the other community.

Anyways, the point I want to make here is , yes there were religious tensions when the film was about to release and so the administration had their own plans but..

Couple of reasons I remember that the controversy erupted were..
1. In one of the scenes, the Hindu Hero lifts the Muslim girl's long veil to see her face.
This insults "the principles of Islam"

2. The song "Chhaiya Chhaiya" had lyrics which read...

"Jinke sar ko isqh ki chhao, paao ke nicche JANNAT hogi". The word, Jannat is sacred and use of the word in this context ...insults "the principles of Islam".

3. Why should the filmmakers portray a Muslim girl eloping with a Hindu guy..why cudn't it be the other way? As this.

..again hurts the Muslim sentiments.

Interestingly, there was a scene in the film where the Hindu Husband asks His Muslim Wife, whether she wants him to convert to Islam. For which she denies.
But there was no scene where the Muslim Wife suggests, ..

..opts or is forced to convert and accept Hinduism.

The film in real sense portrayed the essence of love beyond religion. And should not have received the treatment as it had but if nothing is wrong with the #tanish advertisement then what was wrong with Maniratnam's BOMBAY?

PS. Never to forget that Maniratnam received numerous death threats and even a bomb exploded outside the theatre in Hyderabad or Bhopal (not sure).
