I want to have all my schools-during-COVID writing in one place so figured I'd put it all here. So, THREAD.
It starts in March when I call for schools to close. Other countries had closed & it made no sense that my husband had stopped going to work yet my kids were still in school. I'd soon learn that making sense was no longer a thing that should be expected. nypost.com/2020/03/13/for…
I should also note, because we live in an absurd time where you're for or against, good or bad, "believe" in COVID or not believe, that in mid-Feb I told everyone to prepare for a lockdown and buy toilet paper. I took COVID very seriously.
By end of March, it's clear that remote learning was...not working. nypost.com/2020/03/29/rem…
In April, the mayor announces school is closed for the rest of the year (the governor briefly pushes back that it's HIS decision but then makes the same decision, a hallmark of the time) but remote learning continues to suck. nypost.com/2020/04/12/bil…
In May, Gov. Cuomo finally, finally, releases his reopening plan. Schools are in phase 4! This follows Cuomo saying "All across the city, all across the state, all these buildings, all these physical classrooms. Why? With all the technology you have?" nypost.com/2020/05/10/no-…
It's a really bad sign that there was so little pushback at that point to both Cuomo's comment about physical buildings as well as sticking schools in phase 4. Forget his complacent media, where were the outraged parents? It's scary how little education matters.
The NYC Schools Chancellor actually said "“Never waste a good crisis to transform a system" and has tried to use the Coronavirus crises to do exactly that. In late May, I wrote about how his obsession with destroying good schools is openly on display now. nypost.com/2020/05/27/ric…
This one is not schools specific but in June I wrote about how casually we took away every thing that would matter to kids and how nonsensical it all was. Like they closed parks but opened streets alongside them. It was crazy. nypost.com/2020/06/07/our…
Toward the end of June, the school opening in September was already looking like a disaster. Gov. Cuomo was on his COVID victory tour and parents were being asked to choose between their job and their kid. nypost.com/2020/06/29/new…
In July, they finally announce that schools will open on a part-time basis in September. Parents, still expected to work on a full-time basis, were out of luck. No science was involved in this decision. nypost.com/2020/07/08/new… Image
Right after this decision, anyone with means moved directly to finding a tutor for their kid to form a "pod." I was pissed about this. spectator.us/children-lesse… Parents should do what's best for their kid but maybe speak up for others who can't do this? Again, no science involved.
NY spends over $25k per kid. When schools don't open, that money must be returned to parents to spend how they'd like on the education of their kids. Letting the schools keep those funds and spending additional money on a pod tutor is height of privilege. spectator.us/children-lesse… Image
In July, people started realizing many NY'ers are not planning to come back. A giant part of that is no full-time school. I know plenty of people still living outside NYC and doing remote schooling. I'd love to see updated numbers on how many people left. nypost.com/2020/07/26/how…
It's the end of Aug. Is the Schools Chancellor focused on getting schools open on 9/10? No, he's not, he's focused on making sure that no one finds out what a catastrophe of learning NYC schools are experiencing. nypost.com/2020/08/30/car…
Oh hey, guess what, it's early September and schools aren't opening on time. The teachers union has put kids last again and the mayor has complied. nypost.com/2020/09/05/de-…
It's absurd that NYC schools get $25k per kid and still can't produce anything resembling a full-time education. This is the moment for school vouchers. businessinsider.com/parents-educat…
Kids are going back to school. Just not here. School did not start on September 21st. nypost.com/2020/09/13/i-w… Image
Oh hey, school opening is delayed for 2nd time. I predict that they won't open on the Sept.29 date either because the plan to hire thousands of new teachers is impossible. I was wrong. Schools opened, they just scrapped the plan for more teachers. Voila! nypost.com/2020/09/17/de-…
To be clear on what it means that they got rid of plan to hire more teachers: my kids are in school 2 days/wk & get to go 3 days every other wk provided there's no holiday. On the remote days, they have art and music, no math or reading/writing at all. And we're the lucky ones!
Yay, it's October and schools are finally open! Um, this is school, right? It's...pretty bad: nypost.com/2020/10/02/new…
De Blasio and Cuomo close schools in areas with slightly elevated COVID positive numbers. Do they open schools for full-time learning in areas with consistently low numbers? I'll let you guess the answer to that. nypost.com/2020/10/05/cuo…
We're up to present day. I wrote this week about how this absurd system is breaking parents like me. I think about quitting my job (my job which I really love) and I'm not the only one. nypost.com/2020/10/11/cuo…
As I was doing this thread I was on a Zoom for my sons' (excellent, organized) school. I asked when full-time school might restart. They said likely not this school year. There's no science involved in any of this. Our kids should be back in school full-time, period.
I knew this already but hearing on this call that literally part-time education (I don't mean in-person part-time, I mean part-time in total) is the best we could expect this year is just demoralizing. How is this ok? Anyway, thanks for reading, I'll add more as I write more.
No one else is doing this. As American cities badly mishandle schooling, I most want people to notice we are alone in doing this insane not opening/half opening thing. My latest for @dcexaminer: washingtonexaminer.com/news/left-behi…

The leftism that has corroded the Reform and Conservative Jewish movements has to be beaten back. It starts with abandoning the politicized synagogues. They have aligned with people who hate you. My latest in @RCPolitics realclearpolitics.com/articles/2024/…
If your synagogue is a temple to leftism, it's time to go. realclearpolitics.com/articles/2024/…

New York and Florida saw their first cases in the same week. New York has still not recovered from the damage caused by Gov. Cuomo and his backward, anti-science, child-last lockdown policies. Millions fled New York because of him…including Donald Trump.
Again, what is Trump saying by his (incorrect) view NY did better than FL? NY didn't open schools until end of school yr 2021. Restaurants stayed closed for indoor dining into winter 2021. People suffered. NY's economy still has not recovered. This is what FL should have done?
I'm still wrapped up in the Covid years. It altered my entire life. I get that's not the case for everyone, lots of people have fully moved on. And I will but not yet, in large part because I'm vigilant to the reality of Covid being rewritten. I'm not going to let that happen.

10yo son is soon competing in an intense history tournament. He's a fly-by-seat-of-his-pants kind of kid (do NOT know where he gets it) so hasn't *studied* at all, just reading his reg history-filled books. I'm scared he's going to get smoked. He's working on his victory speech.
My friend whose son is competing in the Middle School competition (my son is in Elementary) says that groups of kids get together on weekends to practice when/how to buzz in. My kid...is not doing that.
Give me your best history trivia question to test him. Can be hard but not super obscure.

I didn't get to watch this when it happened but it's up now & if you want to get all pissed off on a Friday you can listen to @BilldeBlasio call the Covid time "New York's finest hour." It was not. He and his political side drove the city into the ground. opentodebate.org/debate/is-flor…
"Did New Yorkers give up? Did they turn against each other?"- @BilldeBlasio

Yes. Yes, they did. Neighbors were encouraged to report on each other for having too many people in their houses. Orthodox Jews were targeted for worshipping. It was awful. NY's worst moment.
As evidence of NY doing better than Florida, deBlasio says 57 million tourists visited NY last year. That's cool, Florida had 137.6 million in 2022.

Another important reminder: the bullshit hybrid system that @rweingarten championed as a success in NYC was actually the least safe option for everyone. From our book Stolen Youth, buy it here: amzn.to/3ne0BTs ImageImage
You can draw a direct connection between @rweingarten's influence and schools remaining closed. The pathetic left wanted to hurt Donald Trump so they ended up hurting the poorest kids in America. And no one has been held accountable. amzn.to/3ne0BTs Image
Yesterday I posted a video of @rweingarten saying they would "try" to open schools...in summer *2021.* As we note in Stolen Youth, the media tried to argue that Florida was doing something dangerous by opening their schools in 2021. Remember 4 dead teachers in Broward? Image

The Nashville shooter's name is Audrey Hale. Authorities believe she previously attended the school.
I am told that an officer was shot when Audrey Hale was engaged. That officer is in stable condition.
I have a DOB for the shooter, Audrey Hale: 3/24/95.
