THREAD:

Who is UKIP MS Neil Hamilton & Why Do His Political Ambitions Alarm anti-Racists?

The Senedd member for the Mid and West Wales region likes to make out he’s not part of a corrupt political establishment, but he became a household name associated with sleaze. 1/13
In 1994, in what became known as the cash-for-questions affair, he took bribes in return for asking questions in parliament on behalf of wealthy clients and introduced a lobbying firm to a tobacco giant for a £6,000 “commission” fee. 2/13
When the story broke in The Guardian newspaper, Hamilton tried to sue. The “Neil Hamilton Fighting Fund” that was used to finance the prosecution was stumped up by a gang of millionaires with axes to grind against the source of the story, Mohamed Al Fayed. 3/13
One of these was Taki Theodoracopulos who since has loudly declared his support for the Greek fascist party Golden Dawn. Hamilton lost the case & later had his appeal thrown out.

His relationship with racists and fascists continued, however. 4/13
In 1998 Hamilton was pictured giving a speech to the pro-Apartheid South African group the Springbok Club, headed up by a neo-Nazi ex-National Front activist and who wish for a return to the brutal and deeply racist Apartheid system. 5/13
His action went hand-in-hand with his comments calling the African National Congress (the party which led the struggle against Apartheid) as “a typical terrorist organisation” and going on to attack the BBC over a tribute to Nelson Mandela. 6/13
As a leading figure in UKIP, he welcomed so called ‘alt-right’ personalities into the party in 2018, among them a man accused of sending rape threats to an MP, a man with links to a racist online forum, & another personality who defended paedophilia. 7/13
This group of candidates was heralded by the UKIP MS who said he will “look forward to them developing truly dank memes that will trigger lefty luvvies”, a gimmick to try and beckon young recruits into the new incarnation of the party. 8/13
Now he hates BLM, falsely branding George Floyd - the black man who was murdered by a white cop kneeling on his neck, sparking a wave of global protests - a “career criminal, armed robber, and drug dealer.” All of these baseless claims are anti-Black racist tropes. 9/13
He is no doubt angry that the movement against racism under the BLM banner took Wales by storm in May and June, and amassed huge levels of support from across the whole of the country.

But anti-refugee racism in particular has been normalised in society. 10/13
Just in the past couple of weeks news broke that the Tory government may try to use nets or a wave machine to push back boats of asylum seekers, even though a 16 year old boy from Sudan died in August trying to get to Britain. This is the context Hamilton operates in.

11/13
Most recently he has been promoting a group where members have been seen calling for a race war. Some people dismiss him as a joke, but he won election in 2016 & came 3rd in the Newport West by-election in 2019. He remains a threat to the anti-racist cause in Wales.

The rise and eventual fall of Greek neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn contains lessons for Wales about how a violent street movement can combine with an electoral project to create a fascist political force, terrorising minorities & the left.

The threat posed to Wales from the far right and fascism goes beyond national borders.

On a recent Facebook group set up by the far right to coordinate anti-refugee actions in Penally, Pembrokeshire, members flooded in from Sweden, America and Australia. 2 Image
But their movement was dealt a hammer blow in Greece this week as the leaders of one of the world’s most notorious fascist parties were jailed for 13 years for running “a criminal organisation disguised as a political party.” But this is only part of the story. 3 ImageImage

While Donald Trump has contracted Covid & given world class healthcare unavailable to ordinary Americans, it has been workers and working class communities the world over who have been most affected by this virus. This is how we’ve reported on these issues in Wales. 1/19
On Sunday, we published the final instalment of a diary of a food factory worker during Covid. A first hand account, it shows how working class people have been the most at risk of contracting Coronavirus and being made to pay for the economic fallout2/19

At the start of the pandemic, the worker found himself on universal credit & having to use food banks. He was desperate for any type of work, so took a job via an employment agency with a meat processing plant.3/19

This is the diary of worker during Covid which reveals the shocking truth about how some of the lowest paid workers were treated during the pandemic. 1/7
For months from the end of March, this person worked without proper PPE in the midst of a global pandemic. He was employed via an agency, meaning they could drop him at any point. 2/7
Eventually he was told there was no work for him so had to go home and struggle to survive with no income. Then there was an outbreak in the factory and he was called back to plug a labour shortage, but still had no PPE. 3/7

The private company which has taken public money to manage the shambolic testing operation in Wales recorded a 53% rise in half-year trading profits, to £77.8 million, in August this year.
The outsourcing giant Serco had its contract extended in August for test, track and trace. This was in spite of the fact that it had contacted less than half of the contacts of people who tested positive for Coronavirus, and costing over £900 for each person traced.
The Welsh government bought into the scheme but it has been unable to cope in recent weeks, with reports flooding in of people waiting several days before being able to book a test.

17 years ago this week the Welsh scientist, weapons inspector and MoD employee, Dr David Kelly, was found dead. It was following interviews he had given to two BBC journalists that blew apart Tony Blair's false claims about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. 1/15 Image
One journalist that Kelly spoke to, Andrew Gilligan used the interview as the basis to say that Prime Minister Tony Blair had deliberately misled Parliament with the claim that Iraq could deploy weapons of mass destruction within 45 minutes, meaning Britain had to invade. 2/15
In his Radio 4 report, Gilligan said the document making the claim had been ‘sexed up’ by the government, and that a "senior official in charge of compiling the dossier [Kelly]" had told him the 45 minute claim had been cynically inserted even though it was probably false. 3/15

After one death from Coronavirus, Ireland has closed schools & large events. Scotland’s First Minister has called for the same to happen in the UK, where no similar action has yet been taken despite 10 deaths and 590 known cases.
Wales host Scotland in the 6 Nations on Saturday. All available evidence shows that carrying on with large public events helps the virus spread. Playing the game will likely help spread the virus in Cardiff and Wales as a whole. Holding it is a big risk.
The ITV journalist Robert Peston today reported that the government were looking on with ‘grim bemusement’ at the idea of sporting events being cancelled, even though crowd suppression appears to be working in South Korea.
