I am not sure if I posted the story of the time @JoeBiden knocked on my parents' door, but it is so indicative of his character, that I am going to share it maybe again anyway. This was back when he was first running for the senate in Delaware in 1972. 1/7
My mom answered a knock on the door and Joe Biden introduced himself. My parents were a Navy family and registered to vote in Texas, so they couldn't vote for him at all, and they told him so. Encouraged him to move on. Talking to them would be a waste of his valuable time. 2/7
But Joe asked if they could talk a little anyway. See, he was very interested in hearing from the military families in his district. Even though they couldn't vote for him, he wanted to know what their lives were like and what kinds of challenges they were facing. 3/7
Mom tells me he must have stayed for 45 minutes or an hour, asking thoughtful questions and just... listening. He genuinely cared about their thoughts, even though they could not vote for him. 4/7
Let me say that again for emphasis. My parents had nothing to offer @JoeBiden. No vote, nothing. And STILL he cared enough to stay and listen and learn how he could help the people who lived in his state. 5/7
When the conversation wound down, my mom says she told him not to bother visiting the lady across the street. She was chair of the Delaware Repubs (or maybe Repub Women?) but @JoeBiden just laughed and said, "Oh, I know Pearl! I wouldn't miss a chance to say hi." 6/7
And that's @JoeBiden. He genuinely cares about people. Joe gave of his time that day with no expectation or desire for anything in return. Look at how a person treats someone who has nothing to give them, and that is how you can see the measure of their character. 7/7
Well this thread took off. I guess this is where I put a call to action? For the love of decency VOTE. Donate to the dems up and down ticket. If you already have consider donating to the Trevor Project.
I told my dad the tweet was getting some eyeballs and so he sent me a pic of the house, now abandoned of course. Rent was $40. Also, Mom says Pearl was chair of the county republicans. Pearl’s garage is on the left. She was their landlady and they stayed in touch for years after.
