With more nuance: all societies thought history have engaged in censorship to shape public discourse, shape culture, and yes, cover things up. It's a key power of state.

We need a national conversation on what the rules should be for censorship, to bring this incredibly dangerous power back under the purview of formal government.

This should be a key objective for whatever regime emerges from the present political chaos: bring informal state powers current delegated to corporations, criminals, and conspiracies back into the light of formality.
If the formal government leaves powers on the table, they don't go away, they get taken up by networks of NGOs at best, activists and corporations usually, and criminal cartels often.

The point of government is to take all the power lying around, which WILL be used, and organize it into a formal structure that has discipline, accountability, and justice.
