Startled and if we're honest...feeling quite confused at the idea that a councillor would table a motion to remove high visibility traffic calming indicators (under Covid 19 emergency measures). We had to wait until this morning to comment on this! Some thoughts on this👇 1/...
Some context ...These measure bring attention to the 2 Cycle Buses that arrive at the school each day
This is a school of 300 pupils approx were over 100 cycle or scoot each day & who do so each day despite those few rainy days & traffic on their route. This is the "Purple Route arriving ...👇
Along with over 1 million pupils & their families have been asked to actively travel to schools (not to mention that this commute is for many families the only exercise they may take part in each day- Most children are out of shape & need more exercise irishtimes.com/news/education…
Just last year, @RSAIreland Chief executive Moyagh Murdock highlighted the hazardous conditions for children outside school gates
This was echoed by respondents to a @GreenSchoolsIre survey (241 respondents - 74% of whom were Principals).
Greenlanes surveyed parents for a walking bus & of approx 90 responses in relation to experiences with traffic- HALF of concerns refer to either dangerous driving, congestion or illegal parking. This is the road just AFTER the school drop off
You'll note the vehicles that have mounted the footpaths..
Regarding congestion...an average car weighs approximately 1500kg ... or the weight of a 15 man professional rugby team
or 3 grand pianos
Travelling at speed in a school area. That is destructive ... Walking out from behind a car in some areas puts a child at risk of a punch from a heavy weight Mike Tyson
Regarding children's lungs...cars queuing/idling during drop-off hours can generate up to a 300% increase In concentration of fine particles in the school premises.
In cars, it is worse - "Children are in the back of the car & often the car has the fans on, just sucking the fresh exhaust coming out of the car or lorry in front of them straight into the back of the car.” Prof S. Holgate
In august we wrote an open letter calling for safer school streets addressed to the NTA and Councils all over the country in relation to mobility plans affecting children and their families - Co signatories are below
