One irritating thing about current political dynamics is that if Joe Biden says something relatively progressive (transition from oil) he gets predictably slammed by conservatives while simultaneously receiving no credit from progressives.
Here is an idea: if you want to influence someone while simultaneously decreasing the influence of more nefarious forces, you should actually give them credit when they do something that you like. Otherwise you lose all leverage within the accountability structure.
Now, luckily, Biden seems like a person who wants to do the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing. We may not always agree on what the right thing is, but that's his motivation. However, there's still no reason to perpetuate a *disincentivizing* atmosphere.
Another thing I hear? "Obama/Biden didn't LISTEN to progressives." That is false. They listened to & responded to activists for the following causes: the environment, LGBTQ rights, immigration reform, sexual assault prevention, and criminal justice reform.
Now, did Obama/Biden do everything all of us would have wanted them to do? Did they go far enough? Those are different questions. The point is: they did listen and they could be influenced. And boy was that better than this:

Since Donald Trump felt the need to say Nancy Pelosi was "dancing in the streets of Chinatown" last night, I think it's as good a time as ever to point out that SF Chinatown has had remarkably low COVID numbers, compared to similarly dense areas.

sfgate.com/news/editorspi…
SF Chinatown is not just dense in terms of population, but super dense in terms of housing. Multiple people occupy very small spaces, often using bunkbeds. Yet, they controlled COVID early on due to numerous factors.
Of course it's complexly determined, but some of the salient factors are:
-Familial/learned experience w/ Sars-CV1
-Sense of communal responsibility
-*Early* (in Feb) adoption of universal mask wearing, hardcore hand-washing, etc.

19 women who were detained allege that a doctor performed unnecessary medical procedures, including the removal of reproductive organs. There is at least one allegation of a non-indicated transvaginal ultrasound. Medical experts found no evidence of informed consent
There are also cases in which women allege they were retaliated against through the use of involuntary psychiatric evaluation. The "vast majority" of the alleged victims are Black and/or Latino.
To be clear, it would appear from the report that these allegations are strongly supported by available medical evidence. A review was performed of the women's records, in which medical experts found no justification for the procedures. ICE has withheld other evidence.

I kind of feel like Trump is giving drunk uncles a bad name at this point
"Nancy Pelosi was dancing on the streets of Chinatown"

is a comment that was just made.
Ok, WTF is the moderator being like, "Are you saying you would SHUT DOWN the country?"

Ask him if he would follow the science. This is serious. Stop aiding the politicization of it.

Respectfully, no, I don't think this will happen. I think it comes back to this: White Evangelicals are, at this point, a political movement, not a religious one. They can be compared to Catholics, who are actually a religious group that makes religious-political compromises.
Catholics split 50/50 between parties b/c they are clearly making calculations based on actual religious belief and, in many cases, these calculations differ. White Evangelics are, in contrast, politically cohesive. They also *shift* religious doctrine to match political belief.
This is nowhere clearer than in the absolute embrace of Donald Trump. A twice-divorced man who engages in crude sexualization (& I'm not talking about all the sexual assaults, just his language). White Evangelicals are devoted to him. White Catholics are more. . .torn up.

One thing that irritates me about the school-opening conversation is that many seem to assume that there could possibly be a good outcome for kids & we just need to identify what it is. Once the pandemic hit, there was never going to be a good outcome.

Only less bad ones.
It's not developmentally normal for kids to be living largely in isolation. Nor is it developmentally desirable for them to be learning remotely. It is also not desirable for kids to be vectors of disease in their communities, get sick themselves, or for their relatives to die.
I'm pro-being-aggressive on school closures. That being said, pro-school closure people can also act like this is a simple argument. It's not. Upper-income kids w/out disabilities will prob bounce back eventually. For other kids, we're tragically exacerbating extant gaps.

I keep seeing people make a fundamental error, in which they seem to be arguing that intent is the only factor we use when assessing harm or blameworthiness. This is not true. We take intent into account, but it's not the only variable.
If someone drives recklessly & commits vehicular manslaughter, we do consider intent when assessing blameworthiness *relative* to something like a 1st degree murder. But the harm (death) was still caused & we still attach a moral value to the recklessness that caused the death.
I'm not especially keen to keep discussing "masturbation gate," or whatever it is, but seeing this fundamental error over and over again is rubbing my brain the wrong way.
