The reason he’s doing this is that they have been criminally incompetent. Rather than owning up to it, they’ve decided that Americans — fatigued from the slog — will accept the needless deaths. This is a political calculation that might appeal to more people than their rallies 1/
Remember that they slow rolled on reasonable gun legislation after the horror of Sandy Hook and the many other senseless massacres of the innocent and it worked. Americans love nothing more than what’s next and this will appeal to the base instincts of far too many to move on 2/
Why listen to health care experts who want you to eat your vegetables & make the hard choices to save lives. The most shameful characteristic of Americans is an obsession with individualism to the most selfish degree using love of liberty as the excuse for juvenile behavior 3/
This toxic attitude stretches from those superspreader rallies to the unfettered digital platforms to this homicidal/suicidal White House. Don’t tread on me has morphed into that snake that is eating itself.
They put children in cages & have not suffered for that; they mocked the infirm & have not been held accountable; they have supported racist tropes & attacked POC, the military, gays, women and anyone in their way & they have won. Why stop now? 5/
This is shoot the moon time — and a very dark and dire moon it is. They are going to play this one to the end and it might work. So vote FFS or we’ll need a lot of courage for what comes next because no one is coming to help us except us. 6/

This is deep in my long thread, but let me make this dead clear: Banning TikTok and then oddly enough not allowing a decent solution like an IPO here in the US or being bought by a US company is a THANK YOU gift to Mark Zuckerberg from Donald Trump. Or should I say Spasibo? 🇷🇺
In the interests of competition that lifts us all, Facebook should immediately decry this weird move to disallow a reasonable solution that will allow TikTok to continue to operate safely and securely. But a company that landgrabs and neutralizes probably likes unfair advantage.
Crazy me for wanting capitalism to solve this important issue and assuage users that the Chinese government is not spying on us. What do you think @stevenmnuchin1? Do you like capitalism or is bizarre destruction of value your preference? Is the fix in?

Let’s be clear, just because he says he can do something does not mean he can. And he also cannot decree by fiat whether a US company can or cannot buy something. There is a process here and last time I looked this dude was not a king and this is not like his reality show.
This is a massively dopey distraction. As people are dying in record numbers due to his incompetence, he decides to try to stop the Chinese from collecting info on @sarahcpr and her popularity
That said, there’s a lot of irrational damage Trump can do here since this is hard to litigate & he can throw a lot of crazy law at it related to foreign companies. That said, there’re also those involved who would support a US IPO or sale to a US company. A giant mess as usual.

Two things most important from the hearing were 1. Zuckerberg emails that say what we all knew: They buy or bury rivals by copying and there are the emails saying so. Neutralize and land grab are not the words of innovators.
And when Bezos said, because he correctly surmised he had to: “What I can tell you is we have a policy against using seller-specific data to aid our private label business. But I can’t guarantee you that policy has never been violated.”
You can’t steamroll over startups unfettered and cannot be the market maker and sell fairly into that market. Power does corrupts and absolute power? It destroys is what it actually does and cannot help itself from doing that because that is what it must do.

We are airlifting my mom out If Florida right now and quarantining her with only access to old Walter Cronkite news broadcasts to protect her from the Bag of Rage: New research explores how conservative media misinformation may have intensified coronavirus washingtonpost.com/business/2020/…
Btw she argued with me for my ask that she stay alone for a time in a lovely house nearby so I can get her tested before entering our very tight pod. Why, she texted, despite Florida mess. She finally relented when I texted back: So you will not kill me. (I have longtime low WBC)

This is from the first column I wrote for the Times two years ago about Facebook: “They have weaponized social media. They have weaponized the First Amendment. They have weaponized civic discourse. And they have weaponized, most of all, politics.”
Which is why malevolent actors continue to game the platforms and why there’s still no real solution in sight anytime soon, because they were built to work exactly this way.
And ever since, they have grown like some very pernicious kudzu and overtaken their inventors’ best efforts at control. Simply put, the inventors became overwhelmed by their own creations, which led to what I can only describe as a casual negligence, which led to where we are now

Tonight I will only give you flowers and baby, baby and flowers. Trust me on this.
Also a poem: Ross Gay, Sorrow Is Not My Name”
No matter the pull toward brink. No
matter the florid, deep sleep awaits.
There is a time for everything. Look,
just this morning a vulture
nodded his red, grizzled head at me,
and I looked at him, admiring
the sickle of his beak. 1/4
Then the wind kicked up, and,
after arranging that good suit of feathers he up and took off.
Just like that. And to boot,
there are, on this planet alone, something like 2 million naturally occurring sweet things, some with names so generous as to kick the steel from my knees 2/4
