On this day in 1977, Somali healthworker Ali Maow Maalin developed a rash: he had contracted smallpox. He entered isolation, his contacts were traced and vaccinated. Despite working with smallpox patients, Maalin had not been vaccinated... THREAD 👇 1/4
Maalin made a full recovery and was discharged in November 1977. On 17 April 1978 @WHO's Nairobi office sent a telegram which stated:

"Search complete. No cases discovered. Ali Maow Maalin is the world's last known smallpox case."

Later, Maalin worked across Somalia vaccinating people against polio.

"Now when I meet parents who refuse to give their children the polio vaccine, I tell them my story. I tell them how important these vaccines are. I tell them not to do something foolish like me."

"Somalia was the last country with smallpox. I wanted to help ensure that we would not be the last place with polio too."

Ali Maow Maalin contracted malaria in 2013 whilst carrying out vaccinations against polio. He died on 22 July 2013.

🚨 THE DR JENNER'S HOUSE MYTH BUSTING THREAD 🚨

There's a lot of misinformation out there at the moment and, amongst it all, we are seeing a lot of old myths about Edward Jenner and smallpox being shared. Here's a THREAD 👇 1/17 Portrait of Edward Jenner
MYTH: "People have been vaccinating for 1000s of years"
FACT: Inoculation (or variolation) involved deliberate infection with smallpox virus to provide immunity against further smallpox. This has a long history, pre-dating vaccination. But inoculation is NOT vaccination... 2/17 Instructions for the conduct of patients under inoculation
...Inoculation was introduced to America after an enslaved African, Onesimus, shared the technique with his owner. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu introduced it to Britain after seeing it in Turkey. Yet vaccination was different to inoculation in that it used cowpox, not smallpox. 3/17 Images of cowpox and smallpox blisters

🚨 THE DR JENNER'S HOUSE MYTH BUSTING THREAD 🚨
We've been overwhelmed by your support and generosity in the past couple of days, but we’ve also seen a some old myths being shared. Get ready, it's a long old thread coming up! 👇 1/19
MYTH: "People have been vaccinating for 1000s of years"
FACT: Inoculation and vaccination are now used to describe the same thing, but historically inoculation referred to deliberate infection with smallpox virus with the intention of provoking immunity against smallpox... 2/19
... which is the process that Lady Mary Wortley Montagu (AMAZING woman) introduced to Britain after seeing it practised in Turkey. Jenner's first vaccination in 1796 (originally termed 'vaccine inoculation') used a different, less dangerous virus, cowpox. 3/19
