One of the most powerful people in basketball went from selling jerseys out of his car to representing the players wearing them.

Time for a thread πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
1) Rich Paul grew up in Cleveland, Ohio, in a one-bedroom apartment above his father's convenience store.

Paul was a good athlete but was always more interested in business.

As a teenager, Paul would buy retro jerseys from Atlanta and sell them out of his car in Cleveland.
2) In 2002, Rich Paul was boarding a flight at the Akron-Canton airport when one encounter changed his life forever.

High school phenom LeBron James stopped Paul after noticing his throwback Warren Moon jersey.

The two chatted and exchanged numbers.

"It was fate," Paul says.
3) After exchanging numbers in the airport, Rich Paul sold LeBron James a Magic Johnson and Joe Namath jersey.

Over the the next year, after realizing their aligned vision on life, money, and career, their friendship grew stronger.

In 2003, Lebron made his first big decision…
4) Looking to solidify his inner circle after the '03 NBA Draft, LeBron James offered jobs to his friends Randy, Maverick and Rich.

The concept was simple β€” Lebron wanted to work with and be surrounded by people he trusted.

Paul was paid $50k annually and in charge of marketing
5) After leading marketing efforts for 3+ years, Rich Paul approached LeBron James with an idea.

Paul wanted to become an NBA agent, but there was just one problem.

He needed to learn the ropes.

LeBron had his own idea, arranging for Paul to shadow his agent Leon Rose at CAA.
6) After announcing his desire to become an NBA agent, Rich Paul spent 7-yrs shadowing veteran agent Leon Rose.

Eventually, Paul built up his own roster of clients including Tristan Thompson and Eric Bledsoe.

But in 2012, Paul decided to leave CAA β€” founding Klutch Sports Group
7) Shortly after Rich Paul founded Klutch Sports, his longtime friend LeBron James decided to join him.

In the 8-yrs since, Paul has signed 25+ NBA players including Anthony Davis & Ben Simmons β€” while also negotiating ~$1B in contracts.

But with success, comes controversy….
8) In 2019, the NCAA announced the "Rich Paul Rule," which required new agents to have a bachelors degree.

Paul responded, saying a 4-yr degree "systematically excludes those who come from a world where college is unrealistic."

Within hours, the NCAA reversed their decision.
9) Last week, The Athletic released anonymous quotes from NBA agents on various topics.

When asked about LeBron, one agent pivoted to Rich Paul β€” accusing him of player "mismanagement" and being a "facade" for LeBron.

What they don't realize?

Attacking Paul won't stop him.
10) Discrediting Rich Paul's success because of LeBron is lazy β€” should he be blamed for making the most of an opportunity?

The greatest entrepreneurs have it in their blood and Rich Paul is no different.

He went from selling jerseys to representing the players wearing them.

Since 1984, Michael Jordan has been paid over $1.3 Billion by Nike β€” making their partnership the richest athlete endorsement in the history of sports.

The most interesting part?

It almost didn't happen.

Time for a thread πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
1) Following a dominant career at UNC and an Olympic gold medal, Michael Jordan had a decision to make.

Which shoe brand would he sign with?

Despite wearing Converse in college and during the Olympics, Jordan says "I wanted Adidas."

The only problem?

Adidas didn't want him. Image
2) Michael Jordan and his agent, the legendary David Falk, aggressively pitched Adidas on making MJ their feature athlete.

Adidas declined β€” refusing to even make an offer, as they were "dysfunctional" following the death of their founder Adi Dassler in 1978.

One sports franchise owner immigrated to the U.S. with $500 to his name, cleaned dishes for $1.20 per hour, and negotiated a $770M deal on a napkin.

This is his amazing story.

1) Shahid Kahn, born to a middle-class family in Pakistan, always dreamed of immigrating to the United States.

At the age of 16, he turned that dream into reality.

Khan, after being accepted to the University of Illinois, boarded a plane to America with $500 to his name.
2) In 1967, Shahid Khan arrived in Chicago to 30 inches of snow on the ground.

Unable to afford a hotel for $9/night, Khan settled for a bed at the YMCA for $2/night.

The best part?

He washed dishes for $1.20/hour, instantly making "more than 99% of the people in Pakistan.”

Magic Johnson is one of the richest athletes in sports history.

But did you know that only ~6% of his wealth came from his NBA salary?

This is the story of how @MagicJohnson turned $40M into $600M, establishing himself as a legend on & off the court.

Time for a threadπŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
1) Earvin "Magic" Johnson Jr., raised by working class parents in Lansing, Michigan, developed an early love for basketball.

Johnson routinely put up 30-pt triple doubles in high school β€” earning the nickname "Magic."

When it came time for college, Johnson chose Michigan State.
2) At Michigan State University, the legend of Magic Johnson only grew.

We are often fed astonishing facts about an athlete's mismanagement of money, but what about the ones that went above and beyond to live on a budget?

Here's 5 of my favorite stories.

Time for a thread πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡πŸ‘‡
1) Despite making over $8M in his NFL career, Alfred Morris continued to drive a 1991 Mazda.

The most interesting part?

Morris bought the car, which he calls "Bentley", from his college pastor for just $2.
2) Daniel Norris, who received a $2M signing bonus at the age of 18, has continued to live a minimalistic lifestyle as an MLB player.

Norris spends the offseason living in his 1978 Volkswagen van and spends less than $800 monthly.

What would you do with $2M at 18?
