In a hail of presidential comments this week, pay some due attention to this one: Trump saying that a terror plot to kidnap @GovWhitmer (for which a dozen men have been arrested and charged by the DOJ) “maybe it was a problem, maybe it wasn’t”. 1/
2/Earlier this month, the DHS identified such groups as the greatest terrorism threat to the nation. Sec Wolf said DHS is “particularly concerned about white supremacistviolent extremists who have been exceptionally lethal in their abhorrent, targeted attacks in recent years.”
3/ There is a defense bubbling up in some far-right circles that the group was merely planning a house arrest. Watch this training video and see if you buy that: cnn.com/videos/politic…
4/ Now imagine if Trump or any other public official similarly dismissed a plot by ISIS. What would reaction be? And given DHS rates domestic far-right groups as a greater threat today, what does that mean for his duty to protect Americans from all enemies “foreign & domestic”?
5/ How do these terror groups hear the president? Listen to the former DHS chief of staff under Trump:
“DOMESTIC TERRORISTS CELEBRATE THE PRESIDENT'S COMMENTS. AND WHETHER IT'S RIGHT OR NOT, THEY VIEW HIS COMMENTS AS A LICENSE TO KILL” - @MilesTaylorUSA
6/If we’ve learned one thing about Trump, it’s that he knows the meaning & power of words. “Saving suburbia” to white suburban voters, “heritage” to southern voters, “stand by” to Proud Boys. So if his comments re the MI plot are deliberate, what does that mean for the country?
7/ Is this a moment that will push the many tough on terror GOP lawmakers to protest? Or will they wait another week to calculate the potential political costs?

1- Whether the US will have a Covid-19 by October remains "unlikely" but "not impossible," Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious diseases, told me.
"These are all guesstimates," Fauci said
2- “I would assume, & I'm pretty sure it's going to be the case, a vaccine would not be approved for the American public unless it was indeed both safe & effective. If that's the case Jim, I would not hesitate for a moment to take the vaccine myself & recommend it for my family."
3- On convalescent plasma: “The data do not indicate strongly one way or the other...It looks almost certainly that it's safe. The real question is, how effective is this? And that will have to await the proper clinical trials."
The following are quotes from Donald Trump’s sister and niece discussing the president:
Maryanne Trump Barry: “The goddam tweet and the lying. Oh, my God, I’m talking too freely, but you know. The change of stories, the lack of preparation, the lying, the- holy sh*t.”
1/
2/ Maryanne Trump Barry: I mean, I didn’t get him in. but I know he didn’t get into college. And he- And he went to Fordham for one year and then he got into University of Pennsylvania. Because he had somebody take his—take the exams.
Mary Trump: No way!
3/Maryanne Trump Barry: And he-
Mary Trump: He had somebody take his entrance exams?
Maryanne Trump Barry: SATs or whatever.
Mary Trump: Yeah. Oh, Jesus Christ!
Americans, including GOP members of Congress, have an obligation to read this:
“The Cmte’s bipartisan Report found Paul Manafort, while he was Chmn ofthe Trump Campaign, was secretly communicating with a Russian intelligence officer with whom he discussed Campaign strategy..” 1/
2/ ..”and repeatedly shared internal Campaign polling data. This took place while the Russian intelligence operation to assist Trump was ongoing. Further, Manafort took steps to hide these communications & repeatedly lied to federal investigators, and his deputy on the Campaign”
3/ “..destroyed evidence of communications w/the Russian intel officer. The Cmte obtained some info suggesting the Russian intel officer w/whom Manafort had a longstanding relationship may have been connected to the GRU's hack-and-leak operation targeting the 2016 US election.”
The rapid escalation in US-China tensions is real and concerning and comes, as with all things Trump, the question: what is the end game?
To be clear, China is guilty of malign activities around the globe incl stealing IP, jailing Muslims, stifling dissent, cheating at trade. 1/
2/ The US under both Dem & GOP administrations was slow to address these malign activities, clinging to the hope that engagement would change China. It didn’t, which should have been clear far sooner.
3/ As with other Intl challenges - Russia, North Korea, Turkey - Trump believed he could singlehandedly change reality via his personal relationship with Xi, a hope he still seems to cling to.
But nowhere has that hope translated into concrete change.
Pay attention: Trump is taking a series of steps, opposed by both parties, contradicting his admin’s own stated national security goals:
1- Cutting US troops in South Korea, benefiting both North Korea & China (WSJ) 2- Cutting US troops in Germany, benefiting Russia
(1)
(2)
3- Dismissing intel Russia paid bounties to kill US troops in Afghanistan 4- Refusing to challenge Russia despite US, UK & Canadian intel it is stealing vaccine research
(3)
These recent decisions affect several of the country’s most immediate national security threats: Russia, China, North Korea and Afghanistan/terrorism.
He’s moved forward despite even Republican opposition.
He’s accelerating these moves as the election approaches.
Breaking: Lt Col Alexander Vindman to retire from military. His lawyer blames White House 'campaign of bullying, intimidation and retaliation' - CNN exclusive. cnn.com/2020/07/08/pol…
“Vindman was told by senior Army officials that he would no longer be deployable in his area of expertise, which includes Ukraine...He was also told by senior officers he would need a "rehabilitative assignment" even if he had opted to attend the National War College.”
"The President:.attempted to force LTC Vindman to choose: Between adhering to the law or pleasing a President. Between honoring his oath or protecting his career. Between protecting his promotion or the promotion of his fellow soldiers," his lawyer said in statement to CNN.
