Comments on Wayne Grudem's argument for Donald Trump.

A social conservative thinks that if LGBTQ behavior and abortions are made illegal or expensive, less people will engage in these behaviors and that will be good for those people and society. Image
However, it seems unlikely that popular opinion will not permit LGBTQ rights like same sex marriage to be rolled back.
Some estimate that overturning Roe v Wade and returning the matter to the states would reduce abortion by 14%.

But it is uncertain what would happen. I think many women would order the pills by mail.
Image
Once a social conservative is in the minority on the prohibition of alcohol, contraceptives, pornography, same-sex marriage; or mandating slavery, segregation, or prayer in schools; they shift to protecting their religious right to ban or require these in their own communities.
However, as David French says, the Supreme Court has repeatedly upheld religious liberty in 15 straight cases. Most 7-2, 6-3. "No matter what Fox News tells you, your religious liberty does not hang in the balance."
Grudem then says: "I know of no one who has become more boastful because of President Trump being boastful." He argues Trump's example has not been influential. But Fox News amplifies it. 13 were arrested for planning to kidnap Witmer. Jerry Falwell Jr. began acting like Trump. Image
Grudem then goes on to minimize Trump's character flaws. He calls his
- constant misinformation (lies and ignorance), "mistaken ideas,"
- lack of empathy, "vindictive,"
- unethical cheating, "successful,"
- warnings by "those who have known him personally," "speak highly." Image
Grudem then says that it is Biden who has "an entirely different set of character flaws . . . used his government office and influence members of his own family."
But it is Trump during office who got patents, had Moscow Tower deal, and has money pouring into his properties. Image
Grudem then goes to praise Pence, Pompeo, Carson, and DeVos. I have not seen a lot of praise from conservatives for the competence and knowledge of these people. And I have seen their character marred by sycophancy to Trump. Many others around Trump have been shown to be corrupt. Image
Then Grudem writes: "I do not think there is a direct causal relationship between a president who exhibits pride and the prevalence of abortion in a society." But making abortion illegal has not stopped abortions anywhere in the world. It is persuasion.
Grudem imagines Trump's accomplishments. But because Trump is ignorant about policy and incompetent at working with experts and Congress, it is more likely anyone would be better at working to get consensus to address these issues Grudem cares about. Image
Grudem then depicts what to expect from a Biden administration though Biden himself is explicitly for almost none of these things. Exceptions: all Presidents appoint judges. Congress might add seats to the Supreme Court. Federal money has little to no effect on the abortion rate. Image
Grudem does not mention Trump's incompetent, compassionless handling of the pandemic. He also does not mention his odd deference to Putin. He does not mention his separation of children or reduction in the number of asylum seekers accepted. He does not mention the poor.

@phillipmholmes @drantbradley @Fikkert - Kanye West accurately pointed out the three states with the highest proportion of black abortions (MS, GA, AL). Mississippi has the most black people per population so that is not surprising (GA is #3 and AL #6). Image
@phillipmholmes @drantbradley @Fikkert The maternal mortality stats are not excellent.
But we know black women die more than white (37.1 vs 14.7 deaths per 100,000 live births). nbcnews.com/health/womens-…

@phillipmholmes @drantbradley @Fikkert To reduce the number of abortions, people would need to (a) abstain or (b) utilize contraceptives or (c) be supported sufficiently to have the baby.
a. I argue that hoping for abstention is not a sufficient public health strategy.

When a pastor asked me last night what he should preach this Sunday, I recommended Matthew 5:39 "turn the other cheek."
And Matthew and I are thinking alike I see:
My pastor friend was thinking about teaching his people how to vote in his Sunday sermon without being partisan.

But I have already voted and am thinking about what happens next! I also told him I am praying the Psalms to get through these stressful days (and weeks and months!)

I hear a lot of "I cannot vote for a Democrat. Abortion is murder. I am conveying that message!"
When pressed about why, they say: "I want Roe v Wade overturned and abortion to be illegal so there will be less of it!"
But this indicates to me they have not thought this through.👇
Their reasoning:
1. Abortion is murder.
2. Make abortions illegal.

For example:

No reflection on what happens when abortion is illegal.

1. Alcoholism is bad.
2. Make alcohol illegal.
Their assumptions:
- The law is a moral teacher. If you tell people it is illegal, that is another way of teaching them it is wrong.
- Supply and demand. If you make it harder to get by making it illegal, there will be less of it.

Make bad things illegal and they will go away.

Last Saturday Jack Graham sat directly in front of Chris Christie who was admitted to the hospital today. Graham is telling people to come to the indoor worship services at Prestonwood Baptist Church in Plano and Prosper, Texas. Masks are not required.
August 2018: Jack Graham: "what ensued was 35 to 40 minutes of pastors expressing their appreciation for what the Trump administration has been able to do ... Graham said the leaders in the room felt called to speak 'love to power.'"

Franklin Graham is next to him to his right. Then Cissie Graham Lynch, then Paula White-Cain. None of Trump's court evangelicals are wearing masks. But I doubt many talked with Dr. Father John Jenkins because they wouldn't know what to say. (Senator Ben Sasse has a mask on).
John Jenkins, Franklin Graham, Cissie Graham Lynch, Paula White-Cain, then Greg Laurie and Jack Graham at the far right end of the row.
The row behind them is Harry R. Jackson Jr., Robert Morris, Jentezen Franklin.
Row behind that Tony Perkins.
