It’s been noted that funeral wreaths are not obtainable under the current lockdown. Here’s the quick, simple & easy way to make them as well as a central point where information on local flower shops/garden centres that can provide them.
Get a wire clothes hanger & bend it into a circular shape. Twist the hook part until it comes off.
Now get some florists wire (if you have it) or failing that, green wool, green thread or fishing line. Gather up either Evergreen foliage (Lawsons Cypress or Holly are ideal) cutting off the bushiest sprigs.
Tie the first sprig to the coat hanger & make sure it’s secure. Twist the thread/line around its stem & secure. Place a second steam just under the first & tie off. Keep going until the hanger is completely wrapped.
Stand back & check that the foliage forms a proper circle. Where it’s too bushy snip off excess & where too thin, add in sprigs & tie them down.
Next if it is a funeral wreath use dark coloured ribbon. If you don’t have ribbon cut some material to shape along the weave of the cloth. Carefully wrap the wreath with the ribbon keeping the ribbon about 2-3 inches apart. Tie off.
Depending on the person being buried or remembered you can use different coloured ribbon (only use one colour). I made a wreath for my grandmother’s funeral with broad pink satin ribbon.
Next decide on how you want to embellish the wreath (you can of course leave it plain). Cotoneaster, holly berries & Rowan tree berries can be used. Alternatively you could use conifer cones or acorns etc. Funeral wreaths do not have to be plain. Neighbours if asked will help.
Modern wreaths are usually made from a special hoop, a circular oasis & individual flowers pushed down into the wreath. You can tie flowers into your own wreath but they will quickly wilt & die. It’s best to use berries so that they last a while.
Finally some will find getting greenery difficult or will find it hard to make a wreath themselves. This is Twitter & I am sure there are hundreds of volunteers who would be happy to help all over the country.
If anyone has any questions or challenges let me know. At a time of bereavement we would all like to help. If you are a flower shop that can create a wreath at short notice please respond & I will publicise.

Thread: Harry Clarke (1889-1931) was one of Ireland’s greatest artists. His medium was stained glass & he created astonishing masterpieces which integrated Celtic art with Art Nouveau. His imagination was the finest expression of Irish gothic & ideal for Samhain/Halloween ImageImage
One of Clarke’s most moving works is his Agony in the Garden (1924) which is in the Institute of Education & Celtic Culture in Dingle. It is one of a number of stunning windows in the Institute ImageImageImage

Thread: Halloween, as the world knows it, is an Irish invention from ancient Irish-Celtic roots. It’s correct name is Samhain & marks the end of the Harvest. It was culturally appropriated by the Christian Church as All Hallows’ Eve. Here’s an overview. ImageImageImageImage
Samhain was seen as the time when the concrete & the spirit worlds met & was a portal to the Otherworld. All sorts of spirits, particularly malevolent ones, walked amongst the living! Irish people brought it with them as they migrated to all parts of the world from the 4th C. Image
As ‘Trick or Treating’ has been postponed this year I have a treat for today only. Two original drawings for the price of one. Just select the drawings you’d like in my Etsy shop & message me & I’ll set up a listing for you to raise your Spirits!!

Information: Non-essential items & the Irish Covid-19 lockdown.

Based on Twitter & clips from RTÉ there’s a few people (& businesses) upset by which items are considered essential & non-essential. Let’s look at the logic of the decision-making. Image
One item held up as being unfair as as sold in supermarkets is alcohol. At first glance that makes sense. That is, unless you live with a violent abuser where drinking themselves to sleep is a relief for their partner & kids. I’ve seen this flagged many times by survivors.
Another item held up was clothes. The challenge with clothing is people take their time browsing. Covid exposure is measured not only by length of contact with a carrier but also is measured cumulatively. So the longer you spend in an interior the greater the chance of contagion
