It is now October 31 in Japan, and people have already started posting their Jimi Halloween (understated/low key/plain Halloween) non-costumes. I’ll be RTing some over the next couple of days or so.
The interviewer whose choice of pen colors is unusually particular.
(This one probably has the most likes so far. I am not sure I quite get it, but presented here for the record.) #DPZ#地味ハロウィン#jimihalloween
The zoo attendant who can’t keep the baby pandas from clinging to her
(This actually has way more likes so far than the red pen guy) #DPZ#地味ハロウィン#jimihalloween
Isn’t quite sure how to light the incense properly at a funeral, trying to peek at what the person before him is doing.( Tweeted by a funeral parlor.) #DPZ#地味ハロウィン#jimihalloween
Left handed person who found a double-sided ladle while working from home and was freed from the stress of living in a right handed world (This is referencing a 2019 costume, linked. As a leftie I approve heartily.) #DPZ#地味ハロウィン#jimihalloween
Postscript: there was a physical Jimi Halloween party, hosted by @dailyportalz, who started it all in 2014. To remind people to social distance they put signs on the chairs like “you can’t sit here, this chair is an illusion” or “this chair is made of straw”. Awesome.
One more PS: I have seen jimi 地味 translated as “mundane”, but I don’t think that fits. There is no one word in English that covers all the meanings of jimi, but
it generally means plain, low key, understated. Mundane is more arifureta ありふれた or heibon 平凡.
These are jimi outfit: plain, muted but not necessarily mundane.
A jimi life is understated and low key, but not necessarily mundane or boring.
The opposite of jimi is hade 派手. Colorful, extravagant, show-off-y. Jimi Halloween was born as a reaction to the increasing extravagance of Halloween costumes in Japan.

A video of a trial run earlier in October. It says “I’m going to go deliver the mail now!” am when it sets off, and periodically says “Mail delivery robot in operation!” Love the people of Tokyo paying it no attention 😂
Many people in Japan are taking Monday off to have a 4-day weekend, since Tuesday is a holiday (Culture Day)...to watch the COVID-19 numbers in about 2 weeks
Another significant event this weekend is the “experiment” at Yokohama Stadium with bigger crowds. Tonight: 80%, tomorrow 90%, and Sunday at full capacity. www3.nhk.or.jp/news/html/2020…
The third event of course is Halloween. The Shibuya police are ready just in case, although crowds are expected to be smaller.
“A coronavirus variant that originated in Spanish farm workers has spread rapidly through much of Europe since the summer, and now accounts for the majority of new Covid-19 cases in several countries - and more than 80 per cent in the UK.”
(I’m back to updating after the 15:00 report because it fits my schedule better. If there are significant corrections in the 19:15 report I’ll add them.)
The Japanese Prime Minister’s Office (the Cabinet Secretariat) has published a new set of guidelines about where people are most likely to become infected with COVID-19, from the special advisory board. 1/
The 5 situations are: 1. parties where drinking is involved; 2. Long-duration or large number situations with food & drink; 3. Close-up conversations without masks -> 2/
4. Cohabitation in closed quarters (eg dorms, accommodations w/shared bathroom facilities; 5. moving to another location (eg the water cooler) and letting your guard down. 3/
