Here's some additional footage from the Graham, NC March to the Polls where police pepper sprayed multiple participants—including young children &, as seen here, members of the Voter Protection Legal Team. This was sent to me by a member of that team who was subsequently arrested
For more on what happened, here's a detailed local news story: newsobserver.com/news/local/art…
The person who was arrested is a volunteer for the Democratic Party, working as a Poll Observer for Legal Protection Team. And they were *arrested.* They can't speak further because they have a pending court case. This is voting in 2020.
Here's another video a bystander sent me. Shot from a different angle — this is the first half. "Unlawful assembly" on the sidewalk
Here's the second half. Again, this preceded the arrest of volunteer poll observer officials:
The thing that strikes me, watching these again this morning, is the incredibly casual deployment of the pepper spray (tear gas?) as a means of creating overall menace

This piece gets close to and then darts away from how militias et. al. will attempt to justify actions if Biden wins: they do not believe they are subject to the laws of the government, only their interpretation of the constitution

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/…
I've heard this called the "Bundyification" of America and I think it's an apt description, but only if you understand the Bundy's actions as ruled by their very specific understanding of a divinely inspired constitution
You can't just say "these people are wackadoodles." There's an incredibly resilient world view & understanding of "liberty" at work. It can expand to include everything from BLM land to mask-wearing and vaccines. There is a real sense of righteousness & martrydom to defending it

All of the people I know who are handling COVID Month 8 (and the week before election) the best = people who are doing some sort of volunteer or mutual aid work.

I asked a bunch of them to tell me about their work & how it helps (themselves and others)

Prison Book Programs, Hyper-Local Radio Hosting in AK, Grant Writing, Coat Drives, Deep Canvassing, Lunch Making, Universal Preschool Initiative Advocating, Fruit Picking

These stories will absorb you & make you feel better & hopefully (!) look for opportunities where you are
"When I was in Brownies, we sang a song encouraging us to “pick a good turn to do each day.” This feels like a throwback to that, rather than the more resume-oriented volunteering I’ve gravitated towards as an adult."

For @ELLEmagazine, I wrote about white conservative women clamoring for a cause — and finding it in QAnon Lite

elle.com/culture/a34485…
Many thanks to @LByock for first seeding these ideas in my head, @KJezerMorton for her insight into the world of performative mom causes, and the ongoing invaluable research of @_MAArgentino
I do wonder, now that FB has shut down all of the QAnon content, where this energy is going or will be going — some of it's already in anti-vaxx, but will it all move there?

1/ This morning, a friend directed me to the Instagram Stories of a popular southern lifestyle blogger who goes by the name "Charleston Blonde" (she was also a SURVIVOR contestant, of course)
2/ This blogger is never, according to this friend, political. The closest she's come is a single post in response to BLM about being actively anti-racist. But in a poll in her Stories, she asked her followers who they were voting for. At first, the tally was split.
3/ But Trump began to climb into the lead. She asked her readers to anonymously submit their reasons for voting for Trump or for Biden. The answers are a mix of what you might expect: a bit of abortion, a bit of God, a bit of QAnon "Save the Children"

Okay it is Fall Fucking Soup Time, what is your favorite recipe so everyone can cocoon themselves in soup recipes for the next five months?
My go-tos:

A version of this, but add parsnips and a few small potatoes and smoosh up some of the beans ahead of time to make it good and creamy

Yes, the Stew; double it, add more kale and also carrots; that shit is so good:

Have you already received your ballot? Return that bitch NOW. Read all the instructions on how to do so five times and get it on its way to counted NOW.
Other good tips: if you're in a state with early voting, figure out your schedule (early! off-time!) now and figure out a way to make yourself accountable to hold it
- Not all states cover the postage for your ballot. It might get there eventually but WHY WOULD YOU RISK THAT. Buy a stamp now, millennials:
