BEWARE "doublethink"

In 1984 George Orwell defines "doublethink":

To know and not to know, to be conscious of complete truthfulness while telling carefully constructed lies,

1/?
to hold simultaneously two opinions which cancelled out, knowing them to be contradictory and believing in both of them, to use logic against logic, to repudiate morality while laying claim to it,

2/?
to believe that democracy was impossible and that the Party was the guardian of democracy, to forget whatever it was necessary to forget, then to draw it back into memory again at the moment when it was needed, and then promptly to forget it again,

3/?
and above all, to apply the same process to the process itself—that was the ultimate subtlety: consciously to induce unconsciousness, and then, once again, to become unconscious of the act of hypnosis you had just performed.

4/?
Even to understand the word - doublethink - involved the use of doublethink.

The power of holding two contradictory beliefs in one's mind simultaneously, and accepting both of them... To tell deliberate lies while genuinely believing in them,

5/?
to forget any fact that has become inconvenient, and then, when it becomes necessary again, to draw it back from oblivion for just as long as it is needed, to deny the existence of objective reality and all the while to take account of the reality which one denies

6/?
—all this is indispensably necessary. Even in using the word doublethink it is necessary to exercise doublethink. For by using the word one admits that one is tampering with reality; by a fresh act of doublethink one erases this knowledge;

7/8
and so on indefinitely, with the lie always one leap ahead of the truth.

END

BEWARE doublethink
LISTEN closely to politicians and media and LEARN to recognise when they use doublethink

It is very dangerous

“[Mainstream] media serve to mobilise support for the special interests that dominate the state and private activity and their choices, emphases and omissions can often be understood best…by analysing them in such terms”
- Herman and Chomsky, Manufacturing Consent
“[Leaders of the media claim] that the media are independent and committed to discovering and reporting the truth and that that they do not merely reflect the world as powerful groups wish it to be perceived”

SPOILER ALERT: what they claim is not generally true

Journalists internalise what is needed to get on

So, if a line of inquiry shows Corbyn in a good light, for example, journalists right across mainstream media KNOW not to pursue that story

Lord Neuberger, a former President of the Supreme Court, said something we should listen to

Govt’s Internal Markets Bill, which allows UK to breach international law and in vital respects removes right to challenge Govt, puts UK on a “very slippery slope” towards dictatorship
Since Lord Neuberger’s warning, a Bill passed its third reading in the Commons which may prove to be perhaps more dangerous to UK democracy and the Rule of Law than even the Internal Markets Bill

This was Covert Human Intelligence Sources (Criminal Conduct) Bill. #SpyCopsBill
Covert human intelligence sources (“CHIS”) go undercover in order to collect intelligence.

Sometimes, to maintain their cover, CHIS commit crimes. There have been no cases where a CHIS has ever been prosecuted. However, Govt says needs to put protection on a statutory basis.

Orwell warns that we will be overcome by an externally imposed oppression
But in Huxley's vision, no Big Brother is required to deprive people of their autonomy. People will come to love their oppression, to adore the technologies that undo their capacities to think
-Neil Postman
Orwell feared those who would ban books
Huxley feared that there would be no reason to ban books, for there would be no one who wanted to read one
- Neil Postman
Orwell feared those who would deprive us of information. Huxley feared those who would give us so much that we would be reduced to passivity and egoism

Let America Be America Again by Langston Hughes

Let America be America again.
Let it be the dream it used to be.
Let it be the pioneer on the plain
Seeking a home where he himself is free.

(America never was America to me.)

1/?
Let America be the dream the dreamers dreamed—
Let it be that great strong land of love
Where never kings connive nor tyrants scheme
That any man be crushed by one above.

(It never was America to me.)

2/?
O, let my land be a land where Liberty
Is crowned with no false patriotic wreath,
But opportunity is real, and life is free,
Equality is in the air we breathe.

(There's never been equality for me,
Nor freedom in this "homeland of the free.")

EXTRACT from a letter sent from Birmingham Jail by Martin Luther King on 16 April 1963

I must make two honest confessions to you, my Christian and Jewish brothers. First, I must confess that over the past few years I have been gravely disappointed with the white moderate.

1/?
I have almost reached the regrettable conclusion that the Negro's great stumbling block in his stride toward freedom is not the White Citizen's Counciler or the Ku Klux Klanner, but the white moderate, who is more devoted to "order" than to justice;

2/?
who prefers a negative peace which is the absence of tension to a positive peace which is the presence of justice; who constantly says: "I agree with you in the goal you seek, but I cannot agree with your methods of direct action";
