Trump lied to Michigan today about

1) booming auto plants & 2) it’s all because of him.

THREAD/LONG

1.Net loss of 2 auto plants since he took office:
(Warren transmission and a Ford engine plant in Romeo. A shuttered Detroit Chrysler plant is being retooled.
2. Another major loss is Great Lakes Steel, which for more than 100 years sustained the community of Ecorse. Hear from some of the workers here: nbcnews.com/now/video/laid…
3.Also not true no plants were opening before Trump took office. Here’s two examples: Ford Dearborn Truck in ’04 and Lansing GM assembly in 2006.

4.COVID is no excuse.
Jobs were ticking down even BEFORE COVID.
“There was not some rocket ship kind of thing going on here that all of a sudden got messed up by the pandemic,” said Kristin Dziczek of the Ctr. for Automotive Research. Peak auto sales were in 2016/17
5.OVERALL, when Obama/Biden took over in Jan. 2009 MI unemployment was 13%; When he left it was 4.6%. Obama is credited with helping to save the auto industry with the auto bailout.

6.Wages in Michigan are lower today than in 1979, adjusted for inflation.
7. Overall manufacturing jobs as of Oct. are DOWN 10% in MI, according to BLS.

On Trump's closing argument attacking doctors, suggesting they're inflating COVID numbers for profit.

The truth? THREAD

1. Excess death is far worse than what's being reported.

"An estimated 299,028 excess deaths occurred from late Jan through Oct 3"

cdc.gov/mmwr/volumes/6…
2. Doctors and hospital systems are struggling to regain their footing financially from COVID, which HURT them, draining revenue that comes mainly from tests that can't be done over Zoom and hospital procedures cancelled to free up beds for sick COVID patients.
3. Trump signed legislation that provides higher payments under Medicare to hospitals treating COVID patients. But the payments are tied to cases of the disease, not deaths or other outcomes.

The most delightful elderly man - looked to be late 70's/early 80's - just delivered our pizza, handing it over with a slight tremble in his frail arms.

If it's possible for a heart to feel physically heavy, it does.
Shortly after the 2016 election, an older female journalist pulled me aside after a TV hit and explained that, while she was in the sunset of her career, I (and other journalists my age) are now responsible.

We are responsible for explaining WHY we have safety net programs.
And doing it with plainspoken English.

We have them, because before they existed, before Social Security existed, many old people were poor or would just die if they didn't have family to take them in.

"The Depression was a catastrophic blow to almost every American, but none

Important footnote:👇
In his statement, Bobulinksi talks ab his decision to speak out now, following Johnson’s report on Hunter. Bobulinksi says he was “shocked” that Hunter had made millions “behind my back.”

“The Johnson Report connected some dots in a way that shocked me — it made me realize ..
the Bidens had gone behind my back and gotten paid millions of dollars by the Chinese, even though they told me they hadn’t and wouldn’t do that to their partners.”

"History will haunt this raw exercise of political power," said @SenBlumenthal, who is calling for the #BarrettHearing to be delayed.

“Might does not make right. In your hearts, you know what’s happening here is not right, it’s not normal," he said.

1. Nominee named before Ginsburg was buried.
2. Amid a pandemic that should be the priority. Naming ceremony became super spreader event.
3. Days before an election, unprecedented in modern history.
4. Amid news of more disclosures not on her forms.
5. Refused to recuse self from election-related rulings after Trump is suggesting he needs her seated in event of a disputed election.
6. Breaks with "McConnell" rule GOP invoked to block Dem. nominee Garland for 9 months, stating justices shouldn't be seated in election years.

👉No president has seated a Supreme Court nominee within three months of a presidential election, according to Senate historical records dating to 1900.

A final vote would be days before the election.
The closest comparison to the current landscape would be President Woodrow Wilson’s successful confirmation of John Clarke in *July of 1916*

During the tumultuous election year of 1968, Johnson did attempt to replace retiring Chief Justice Earl Warren by elevating Associate Justice Abe Fortas to be chief justice and naming Homer Thornberry, an appeals court judge, to the high court.

NEW to @NBCNews:

👉Judge Barrett has not released full records of her tenure at Notre Dame, where in the past few days it's been revealed she participated in previously undisclosed talks and anti-abortion ads.

Progressive watchdog groups have outstanding records requests and just sent a letter to her asking for her consent to disclose the info:

"To not have any emails or much of a more in depth look at her work history is not normal," said Kyle Herrig with Accountable.US:
“If she was at a public university, we could’ve gotten her emails. We got emails from federal agencies and even the White House in past nomination fights," said Herrig.
